As a young adult you have a lot of worries: sorting out career, relationships, setting up your future. All of that alone can be stress enough, but add depression, anxiety, and the psychological struggles that come with that stress it gets even worse. While your struggles are very real, it can be difficult to get anyone to take them seriously. People your age don't have any more insight than you do about it, and older adults don't remember how frightening these struggles can be. They don't remember feeling like you're behind on the imaginary timeline, or feeling less accomplished than you should be. You aren't alone.

I specialize in individuals dealing with low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression, those moving through life transitions or on a journey of sexual exploration, as well as couples managing intimacy or communication issues.
Entering therapy is similar to summoning the courage to open an over-flowing closet that has been long ignored. Though daunting, with the right tools and an understanding guide, the task can become a manageable and rewarding experience. As your guide, I can help you shine a light on emotions, experiences, and relationships that you may be afraid to touch due to fear, shame, or uncertainty of how to process them. By utilizing an integrative approach, I help my clients assess and move through their emotional experiences while also applying new skills to help them reach their innermost personal goals.

I enjoy working with individuals, couples, and families with various struggles including anxiety, depression, relationships, parenting, spirituality, sex/sexuality, trauma, grief, and coping with life's everyday stresses.
Each of us is on a journey, and sometimes this journey can become quite stressful. At times we need someone on the outside looking in, to help us gain perspective and to encourage us toward healthy change. I have a passion to walk alongside others in their journeys to offer hope and help in healing. My Christian perspective and person-centered approach allows me to value each person as a fellow Image-bearer. I strive to create a safe environment, holding strongly to a non-judgmental stance, so that clients may feel accepted for who they are.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
