My background includes a wide range of clinical models, such as strength-based therapies, multigenerational family systems models,
emotionally focused
therapy (
EFT
), Gottman model, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), amongst others.
Are you unhappy in your relationship? Are things just not what they use to? Lately, you have not felt like yourself and want to get back on track. Relationships are an integral part of our lives. This is true not only in how we feel our relationships are doing, but also in the sense of belongingness. Anxiety, depression, past traumas, and relationship issues can all get in the way of our mental health. We have an innate need for connection and emotional wellbeing for overall health, and this is what I love to help my clients do.

Nothing is more interesting than people. Although I love math, physics, engineering, and chemistry, I chose to study psychology because of the challenge and importance of understanding what it means to be human. My Doctorate in clinical psychology was followed by a post-doctoral Master's in clinical psychopharmacology. I have advanced training in evidenced-based therapies for couples, including
Emotionally Focused
Therapy (Sue Johnson's
EFT
) and the Gottman method (level 3).

When relationship problems occur, couples can easily hit a roadblock. Through therapy, couples quickly learn that they most likely have a communication issue rather than a fundamental flaw of the relationship. Couples therapy works on healing and improving how you communicate. Your relationship can be strengthened and the bond of your friendship restored through couples counseling. If you're struggling in your relationship, seek help early on to avoid a build-up of resentment and disconnect. It's best to be proactive with issues that arise.

Avoiding the talk feels heavy and exhausting. How does this fit into the life you pictured for yourself? You're walking on eggshells, yet your partner does not have a clue of your endeavor. Roommates under the same roof; when did that happen? Loneliness peaks in, but you are afraid if you bring it to therapy, everything will crumble. Whatever you do, you can't seem to untie the knot in your stomach. You miss the times when sharing a life together was effortless and fun. You're in good company. This is how my clients described their current state when they decided to work with me. Let me pour you a cup, and let’s talk.

As individuals, we experience life stressors, and during these times we can benefit from therapy as a resource to clarify our intentions. As a licensed psychotherapist, I have experience in assisting adults, teens, children, families, and couples overcome many of life's challenges. As a systemic therapist, I understand that problems not only affect you, but also your environment. Our social life, work, family, and romantic relationships often suffer when we need support the most.

Everyone asks us how we are doing and we generally put on an image of “put together” perfection because we do not want to appear as though we don’t have our lives together. In this culture where hustling is a status quo, why would anyone show their underbelly? My approach to therapy is simple; it is to allow for you to lead the sessions and paint the room with your experience of an event while I assist in reframing the lens in which you are viewing your story. Oftentimes we get stuck in the weeds of our subplots and are unable to view the key details that make up the theme in our lives.

Emotionally Focused Therapists
Who is emotionally focused therapy for?
Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.
Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?
People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.
What happens in emotionally focused therapy?
Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.
What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?
EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
