As a Christian counselor I view therapy from a client-centered approach, believing the client is the boss and the therapeutic relationship can be more healing than any given tactic or technique.
Life is hard and full of change. Sometimes we need help navigating those changes and transitions in life. I get that, because I also experience them. After almost 18 years in law enforcement, I made the transition to becoming a therapist. I have experience working with clients who are struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Injuries, Trauma, Depression, Anxiety, Stress, Financial Issues, and Process Addictions. I also have experience working with couples to strengthen their marriages.

I am a Christian and would love to incorporate faith into your sessions if you so desire.
Therapy is such a wonderful step to take in your mental health journey. However, I also know that it can feel like a difficult step to take. I know what it’s like to struggle with mental health challenges and I have been able to reap the benefits of seeing a therapist for my own life. I am passionate about relationships in the context of marriage and family. I feel honored that I get to work with families and couples in order to help them pursue a healthier lifestyle as a unit and not just as individuals.

I am EMDR certified and can utilize various types of therapy including Christian counseling when requested.
I enjoy connecting with and walking alongside individuals, couples and families to help you heal from pain, develop a new relationship with your mind and body and overall help in the transformation of lives. I value the intersections between physical, mental, emotional, relational and spiritual health. In my practice I incorporate all five areas in the assessment and treatment phases of therapy. I look forward to guiding you on the journey to wellness and healing. I would love to assist you in making changes that suit your journey and help you reclaim a peaceful life. There is health, hope, peace and joy in the midst of chaos.

My path to becoming a therapist was more of a calling than a career decision. I’m not particularly suited to this profession. I’m introverted, which causes me to present as somewhat unfriendly and aloof to strangers. I’m really not concerned with small talk or what I consider the superficialities of life. But when it comes to exploring the deepest, most difficult and painful core aspects of your life that’s the space where I feel most comfortable. The foundation of my practice is my own personal journey in 12-step recovery. I would say I was "chosen" for the gift of recovery from a self-destructive lifestyle more than 33 years ago.

Struggling with negative beliefs, unwanted thoughts, past traumas, depression, or even parenting? Regardless, you don’t have to face those challenges alone. We are often impacted by past events, resulting in unhealthy coping mechanisms and negative core beliefs about ourselves and/or the world. Even when we “know” our behaviors and thoughts aren’t helpful, sometimes we just feel so stuck and aren’t sure what, if anything, will help. That's where I am come in: I’m here to provide a safe environment for individuals to overcome past struggles, challenge & replace negative beliefs, develop healthy coping skills, and reach healing.

Life can be difficult. The experiences we encounter can shape and mold us unto someone we may no longer recognize, understand misplaced feelings or have an impact on our daily functioning, but we continue to press... We have people relying on us, responsibilities waiting on us while fears and pain hunt us....but we continue to press....We think the feelings, flashbacks, nightmares, anger, hurt or pain will go away not realizing it is trauma. Trauma is simply an event which causes extreme distress and can manifest in different ways for different people. Lets work together to live a healthy life healed from the effects of trauma.

Like war, trauma from adult and childhood abuse, hurt from church and family have left many of us just limping through life. Just because you are use to the pain, it doesn't mean you or your love ones should continue to live with the pain. I am honest and I like to see results. I also like to work with clients that are ready to be honest and put in the work to see their desired results. I primarily see adult women with trauma and couples in need of support! My office has clinicians that see individuals of all ages! I am also a Qualified Supervisor that is passionate about supporting Registered Interns on their licensing journey!

Are you struggling with a loss? Navigating a challenging marriage? Overwhelmed with parenting, balancing home and school? Anxious about transitioning to college or the workforce? Could you use a “Life Manual” with a "how to" for this moment or the next? Or someone saying "turn to Appendix C for this"? If only it were that simple. Living is full of ups, downs, and upside-downs; twists and turns, backward and forward, and even side-to-side. Right, wrong, or other, we do our personal best in the space we’re in with the skills and information we have. No matter what your situation, help, encouragement and support is available.

Hi! I'm Yolanda. I'm an open-minded mental health therapist, licensed in the state of Florida. I've been practicing for over 10 years. However, I joke that I've been a therapist since I was 12 years old because I've always sought resolution, peace, and togetherness. My expertise in relationship counseling comes from working with many families over the years. Relationships can be hard at times because there are on-going situations and circumstances that challenge them. There are effective ways to get through the tough times. I can help you implement effective tools needed to attain and maintain healthy relationships.

I believe one of the bravest things you can do is begin to understand your own story. Most people view therapy as a one sided conversation, with minimal opportunity for interaction. I want to help you accomplish whatever solutions and life changes you are seeking while enjoying the process as much as possible. Simply put, therapy does not always have to be a painful experience. Reaching out to a therapist can be intimidating, but I hope you will take a moment (and maybe a couple of deep breaths) to call and see how I can help you.

Christian Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

Therapists and clients don’t need to share the same belief system or background to be able to work effectively together, but a therapist whose training includes a focus on cultural competence may be better able to form a therapeutic bond with individuals from a range of backgrounds, as they will have experience in tailoring their approach to each client—and will be prepared to acknowledge and consider the effects of culture, religion, and other factors on each individual.

Why is it important to find a therapist sensitive to Christian values?

Each person brings a unique history and background to therapy, making it important to find a licensed therapist who is trained in a broad range of treatment modalities. In addition, for people who grow up in a faith tradition that strongly influences the way they conduct their everyday life, finding a therapist who understands or shares that background can ease the disclosure of sensitive information and facilitate the therapeutic process. For some clients, a Christian therapist is likely to incorporate faith-based principles into emotional healing techniques.

How do I recognize an effective Christian therapist?

Christian therapists are licensed mental health professionals—holding a master’s or doctoral degree in medicine, nursing, psychology, counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy—who are also familiar with Christian beliefs and values. They have an understanding of the importance that Christian principles play in the lives of individuals and families, which allows them to be especially sensitive to the kinds of struggles that can affect daily functioning. Like all effective therapists, a Christian therapist will have undergone training and certification in a variety of treatment modalities that help people through crises and enable them to master the challenges of life.

Why might someone feel comfortable with a Christian therapist?

While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, research has long established that a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic success. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who not only is responsive to questions and concerns but also shares a client’s faith and values. Sensitivity to spiritual matters as well as to everyday struggles can provide a welcome sense of safety and contribute to the bond between client and therapist, both of which support the therapeutic process.

Who is included in Psychology Today’s directory of Christian therapists?

The directory of Christian therapists includes professionals who have shared their background in their profiles. However, not all therapists choose to disclose this information, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. The directory also shows therapists who indicate that they have extensive experience working with Christian clients, regardless of their own background or religious affiliation.
