Do you find yourself overtaken by emotions? Swept up in anger, anxiety , or sadness, and watching it ruin relationships or future plans, while you feel like there's nothing you can do to stop it? We've all had emotional moments, but sometimes, it feels as if they are running everything. Like you have to do what they say, or how you feel in the moment, even if you feel guilty and hate yourself afterwards.

Anxiety and depression, trauma, abuse, marriage counseling and exploring the impact of transition are also a part of my work.
One of the bravest choices a person can make is to come to counseling. What I hope is that the time together is where you will feel listened to, feel safe, and know you are not along as we explore why you have come.

Deciding to seek therapy can be a hard step to take because it means facing your problems rather than running away from them. When we experience uncomfortable emotions, our instinct a lot of the time is to avoid it and convince ourselves (as well as others) that we’re okay. This is one way we end up in vicious cycles of depression, anxiety , and low self-esteem. My passion is to assist individuals with breaking this cycle by gaining new perspectives on their situations and life in general. Your current situation is NOT your permanent destination.

You feel confused, lost and overwhelmed, wondering often why you are not living your life to your fullest potential. While you may be tired of feeling broken or inadequate, you don't know how to shift from feeling like you are surviving each day to thriving in your life. You may have experienced painful events in your life, and you struggle with making sense of them. Maybe constant thoughts and feelings of anxiety become crippling for you at times. If you add in life's transitions or making changes to your life, it may feel like it is too much to handle on your own. At the same time, you want so much more for yourself.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
