Hello, My name is Petergay Sterling. I am a psychoanalytical therapist. My ideal client is someone who would benefit from evidence based trauma therapy. No matter the type of trauma or severity I utilize eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) to decrease the impact of reliving emotionally traumatizing memories. By healing past wounds, the individuals I see are able to re-engage in their lives. For a complete description of EMDR, please review the following link: http://www.emdr.com/what-is-emdr/

Our goals and ambitions in life are forever changing. As values and priorities shift over time, what used to meet our needs, may no longer work for us in the here and now. In order to embrace personal growth, learning to first accept ourselves, just as we are, is key. For many, this can sound like the exact opposite of what change is all about, especially if we feel stuck, unfulfilled, embarrassed, or ashamed. If you feel like something is holding you back from living life as you envision it, therapy can be an empowering next step.

Our trauma-informed approach incorporates sensorimotor art therapy, mindfulness, and
somatic
exploration.
Art therapy can access the mind, body, and emotions in ways that are distinct from verbal expression alone. At Indigo, we love empowering people to discover and harness their own creativity for healing. Common therapeutic goals at Indigo Art Therapy may include coping with anxiety and stress, managing strong feelings, healing from trauma, improving self-expression and communication, creating emotional awareness and adaptability, developing insight and self-compassion, and nurturing healthy relationships and boundaries. Art skills are not necessary to benefit from art therapy. Progress can happen through scribbles and stick figures.

You are anxious and overwhelmed. You zone out on TV or Netflix or scroll on your phone as procrastination fueled by negative self talk becomes an everyday thing. You constantly question yourself and use overwork, food or other unhealthy ways to self soothe. Low self confidence gives way to feelings of isolation and imposter syndrome and your ability to make and trust decisions you need to make. You feel fatigue, discomfort in your gut or tightness in your neck and shoulders. Sometimes you feel dizzy, light headed or shaky. Your can't sleep, there is work and relationship stress and you often don't look forward to the day ahead.

Making the choice to come to therapy is an important decision. Apart from the clinical training and skill of your counselor, the most important part of your experience is the therapeutic relationship. Most people who come to counseling need to talk about things that can be hard to talk about with someone else. I understand that, and this is why I put so much importance on building a trusting relationship. In order for you to say everything exactly how you mean it and to express yourself fully, you need to feel genuinely safe and free from judgment.

Thank you for visiting my profile! I like to use a gentle, caring, non-judgmental and creative approach. I have helped clients overcome anxiety, depression, PTSD, addiction, grief and other mental health concerns. Do you suffer from the pain of addiction? This a double dose of pain. Addiction stems from trauma and negative experiences, and living with addiction only adds to the burden. I help people with addictions by using EMDR. This therapy helps clients become desensitized to the power of urges, triggers and cravings, as it installs positive beliefs, behaviors and emotions. Change is organic and it fosters healthy thinking!

Going to talk to somebody about relationships, emotions, and feelings can be new territory for some. It’s hard to share our most private thoughts and experiences with people we don’t know. However, it’s often easier to share with those people that are objective and aren’t in your inner circle like a therapist. Life has gotten even more complex with Covid bringing an increase in fear, stress, anxiety, grief, and suicide. I can offer you 20+ years of experience in multiple areas and modalities of therapy. I’d be happy to chat with you for a few moments to answer any of your questions and to listen to see how I may be of help to you

Hey! I am Terri. So many people that I have met describe having been stuck. They have been unable, with the tools they have had, to get unstuck. Typically, it seems that trauma in one form or another is behind that. We all have a story, right? The one that led you here. Trauma can be big trauma, like we think of car accidents or sexual assault but it can also be things like grief or loss, divorce, emotional abuse, etc. Things that get stuck, that mold us in a sense... those same things also make us strong and build character, once we learn how to build from them.

Somatic Therapists
How does somatic therapy work?
Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.
Is EMDR a somatic therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.
Is somatic therapy evidence-based?
Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.
What is somatic trauma therapy?
Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
