I have experience in providing substance abuse counseling to adolescent and adult populations.
I have faith in the idea that people can, and do change. In my experience, change is not always a linear process. Often, when trying to change a situation or behavior, people fall short or stumble. Being able to truly evaluate an individual's strengths and building upon those, allows for the needed empowerment to overcome our barriers. I am passionate about helping individuals to overcome various behavioral health concerns. Whether you are facing addiction, anxiety, anger issues, grief, stress, depression or trauma, I use a strengths based approach, coupled with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to build upon your inherit resiliency to affect change.

Many years ago I went through my own personal challenges as a teenager and found myself in the office of a psychotherapist.
I enjoy collaborating with my clients on how they can reach the overall wellness goals. My approach to wellness recovery is direct, supportive and empowering. I help clients develop insight into the changes needed to improve the way they think and feel. My ideal client is someone motivated to make changes but needs direction on how to do so. Many of the people I have worked with have struggled with relationship issues, grief, addiction, depression, anxiety and life transitions.

I have a special interest and expertise navigating through different life stages whether a teenager , young adult in college, or as a parent raising children with special needs.
Therapy can be hard. It can be scary. Yet, it can also be a lifesaver! A significant part of my professional background consists of working with the child welfare system as well as personally, being a foster parent and adoptive mother to three amazing children with special needs. I have extensive experience working in community and hospital settings with children, teens, and young adults who have experienced acute and chronic medical conditions, child abuse and neglect and low self-esteem. I believe the body comes to therapy and is as valuable a pathway to shift perspective and explore emotions as the mind. I have witnessed amazing transformation in people, including myself, when their physical form is re-aligned and when they have the opportunity to move. I have also witnessed profound change with shifts in perspective, focus, and belief in self. My goal is to have a practice that fosters both. That's why I use Solution Focused Brief Therapy and Yoga (if desired).

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
