Loving someone with addiction puts us on pins and needles. Early recovery can feel uncertain. I work with partners and family members of people in addiction and recovery, guiding you through rebuilding trust and creating boundaries that support both your loved one and your own emotional well-being. You do not have to navigate substance use fears alone. I am licensed and available for telehealth in both Florida and Missouri. Do you say "it's fine" when it isn't? Do you apologize when someone wrongs you? Maybe you replay conversations for days, draft the text, delete it, and just absorb the discomfort instead. You're the one everyone leans on; and you're exhausted in a way sleep doesn't fix. None of this is a flaw. Together we'll trace where it started and rebuild from the inside out, so you can care about people without disappearing into them and stop needing everyone's approval to feel okay. We are forever a work in progress. In our sessions you might, laugh, cuss, or cry; ultimately you heal. You were always enough and never too much.

You’ve been holding everything together for everyone else for a long time, but lately it’s catching up with you. You might feel burned out, on autopilot, or unsure who you are outside of work, caregiving, and old expectations. A part of you knows something has to change, but you may feel unsure where to start or how to do it.
I help adults, often in midlife, untangle what’s not working, get clear on what they actually want, and take honest, doable steps toward a life that fits them better.

Hi, I'm Melanie Storrusten, LCSW. Congratulations on the brave and kind choice to engage in this work. ALIGN is a holistic and integrative therapy practice tending the gap and the overlap between psychotherapy and healing arts. We are a collection of therapists for folks who haven't found what they're looking for from therapy in the past. If you are looking to do more embodied work to access deeper layers of healing, we might be your vibe. My personal work is currently offering more communal containers for the work: group therapy, workshops, and ritual, as well as offering supervision, training, and consultation to other therapists.

Letting go of the past—especially when it involves trauma—is never easy. While it may sound straightforward, healing from painful experiences often requires courage, guidance, and intentional work. In my practice, I support individuals in exploring their past in order to gain insight into how it impacts their present, empowering them to move forward with greater clarity and strength.
I also recognize the profound role that faith can play in the healing process. For clients who desire it, I incorporate a faith-based approach, grounded in the belief that God is the source of both healing and hope.

What therapy types help with codependency problems?
Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.
What happens in therapy for codependency?
Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.
How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?
Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.
What is the goal of therapy for codependency?
One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
