Additionally I also use an Internal Family Systems approach to assist people in healing from trauma.
Hi I am Tanya Thompson, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). I have eleven years experience counseling people with depression, anxiety, grief/loss, and trauma. Over the years, I have seen clients make long-lasting and positive life changes. These changes occur when people delve into the causes of their depression and anxiety. Using a cognitive-behavioral approach we will work together to change the negative thought patterns that accompany depression and anxiety.

Why am I like this? Seeking the answer to this question is the reason people want to work with me. I believe everyone deserves to know, love, and accept their whole self. Through the therapeutic process you will learn the skills to understand your past experiences and face future challenges with more confidence. Healing and self-discovery are long-term investments for yourself and the people in your life. There is no “one size fits all” solution, which is why I incorporate elements from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Internal Family Systems Therapy, DBT, Somatic Therapy, and Attachment Theory into my therapeutic approach.

I am trained in Internal Family Systems(level 1), and I am using it dominantly, because of how it tries to understand and have compassion for all of our parts.
During my career, I have worked with both individual and group settings, including adults with people living with HIV, veterans, incarcerated people and transgender/gender variant individuals. These populations included people with depression, bi-polar disorder, personality disorders, anxiety, PTSD and depression. I co-facilitated a group for trans youth and co-coordinated it for 6 years. As a proud bisexual, trans man, I love to work with my LGBT communities. I celebrate kinky and poly people. I strive to be an imperfect ally to non-binary trans people and people of color.

If traditional talk therapy does not fully work for you or takes too long it is not your fault and you are not alone. You may understand the root of your issues and still continue to experience symptoms like anxiety, frustration, lack of focus, or feeling stuck because stress or traumatic experiences have caused dysregulation of your nervous system. That is why I combine different approaches including EMDR and IFS to reprocess traumatic and stressful experiences, Polyvagal to re-train the nervous system, Somatic to address memories stored in the body, and Gottman Couples therapy to heal your relationship

My passion is to help people rebuild their relationship with God; to thrive in sobriety. I have extensive experience with individuals that struggle with addictive and compulsive behaviors such as: sex, pornography, drugs, alcohol, codependent relationships, etc. Over the past few years, I obtained more specialized education to specifically assist with sex, pornography and lust addiction through the work of Dr. Patrick Carnes Ph.D; a pioneer in the field of sex addiction. His work combined with a method to heal relational/attachment wounds, called " IFS", is the best strategy that I have found for recovery.

My approach combines evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems ( IFS), and Psychodynamic Therapy.
Thank you for visiting my profile. I love helping clients who are struggling with relationship issues and are eager to do the work it takes to form a loving and fulfilling relationship. I’m passionate about helping clients work through the consequences of childhood emotional neglect as it often impacts how we form relationships as adults. There’s a lot of suffering that comes as a result of emotional neglect/trauma, not just relationship issues. There’s typically anxiety, depression, anger, low self-esteem, poor boundaries, feeling overwhelmed, a deep longing for, as well as, fear of connection, interpersonal conflict, etc.

I will work with you to help you heal from the past, reprocess memories, develop new skills, and grow into the person that you were meant to be. Its never too late to live the life that you deserve. I balance my sessions with technical expertise, intuition, and a sense of humor.

Learning to accept and love yourSelf is the key to becoming confident, powerful, Self-Led, and free. This radical self-acceptance is the foundation of inner peace, healthy relationships, and a life filled with joy.

My philosophical orientation toward therapy tends to be "eclectic." In selecting treatment methods, therefore, I tend to draw ideas and techniques from a number of the major counseling approaches that are supported through research (e.g., cognitive therapy, behavioral therapy, client-centered therapy, emotionally focused therapy and family systems therapy). During the early phase of counseling, I will encourage you to share information with me that will help me understand you and that will help me know more about the nature and history of the concerns that brought you to counseling (e.g., work, family, social relationships, health, and spirituality).

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapists

What is Internal Family Systems therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on sub-personalities, or “families,” within a person, which may be made up of wounded parts and unpleasant emotions like anger and shame. These sub-personalities can come into conflict with each other and with an individual’s core Self, leaving the person feeling detached from positive traits such as the “8 C’s” of confidence, calmness, creativity, clarity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and connectedness. By healing a patient’s wounded parts, a therapist aims to restore balance and bring on positive change.

How does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

An IFS therapist will work with a patient to identify their particular sub-personalities, recognize the emotions powering them, and release them. By doing so, the patient should become more able to address any underlying problems their sub-personalities may have been trying to protect them from. Ultimately, a patient discovers ways to manage internal and external conflicts on their own, through techniques such as relaxation exercises, journaling, and making charts depicting the relationships between their core Self and their distinct parts.

Does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

IFS therapy has been shown to help people address conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, fears and phobias, trauma, and substance use disorders. Some research has also found that it can help individuals deal with symptoms of physical health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain, everyday functioning, depressive feelings, and low self-compassion. There are some conditions for which IFS treatment, specifically discussions of one’s “parts,” may be less appropriate, such as schizophrenia or other states that involve psychosis or paranoia.

How long does Internal Family Systems therapy take?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for IFS therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core concepts of IFS, some patients quickly make progress. While experiences vary, most will find that it is a relatively longer-term therapy, involving months and sometimes years of sessions.
