I'll work with you to break down obsessions and intrusive thoughts into their separate parts, such as thoughts, physical feelings, and actions. After validating your hardships and commending you on your bravery to make a change, I'll have you identify and rank situations that may elicit the desire to act on your compulsions. We'll work on sitting with the discomfort of these situations until the need to engage in compulsions is reduced and your anxiety is no longer overwhelming. At NOCD, my team and I provide effective treatment for OCD and related conditions, such as BFRBs (including skin-picking, nail-biting, and hair-pulling).

From childhood, I've had compassion for anyone suffering from a mental health or substance use disorder. Several of my family members struggled with both throughout their lives. That compassion influenced me to pursue counseling as a profession. At NOCD, we specialize in providing evidence-based treatment for people with OCD. Our deep understanding of the nuances and intricacies of OCD enables us to properly diagnose and treat it. We have received intensive training in Exposure Response and Prevention Therapy (ERP)—the gold standard treatment for OCD.

My approach to treating OCD involves understanding how OCD presents in a person's life and then building a treatment plan together—one that feels comfortable but is also challenging and can produce successful outcomes. In therapy, I first establish that this is a judgment-free zone—I’m a safe person to speak with. Second, I want to make sure you know exactly what OCD is and the best ways to treat it. Third, I'll walk with you as you do exposure response prevention exercises to slowly defeat the OCD monster. At NOCD, we specialize in providing evidence-based treatment for people with OCD. I perceive psychotherapy as a process of teamwork, sharing of power, and ensuring that clients have a sense of hope. There is no single way to live one's life and, as a clinician, I respect when my patients believe they are sufficiently on track. I also offer comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations. These evaluations are commonly used to detect dementia, adult ADHD, learning disorders, and is used to support diagnosis such as Alzheimer's disease and Traumatic Brain Injury. At my practice, we offer comprehensive, personalized programs to help you build a stronger future and sustain it.

This may be your first time reaching out for help, which can feel really anxiety-provoking. Whether you desire to gain a deeper understanding of yourself, improve your relationships, live a more fulfilled life, or address specific concerns, you are not alone and I can help you. I place a heavy emphasis on creating a non-judgmental, warm, and supportive space for you to address what may be weighing on you. You may find that you prefer a more directive approach where I offer more guidance or specific skills, or a more non-directive approach where you lead the way and together we explore your different feelings, thoughts, and values.

You may have been stuck many times in your life: in boring jobs, disrespectful bosses, ungrateful friends/family, in sick relationships, in your own lack of confidence, in concerns about your appearance, your intelligence, your body... feeling trapped, desperate, weak, confused. You've got used to it, it becomes routine. You may yearn for happiness and fulfillment, but you don't know how to get rid of that feeling, the guilt, the shame. Or maybe, sometimes you don't even realize that you're stuck at all, you just know that you've lost yourself. You may feel that you are too much, and at the same time, not enough.

Hoarding Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for hoarding?

Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) has been well-studied in the treatment of hoarding. This type of therapy includes changing beliefs surrounding possessions, as well as learning how to discard items and reduce acquisitions. The hoarder may also gain much-needed organizational skills. Another useful therapy may be compassion-focused therapy, which can address emotion regulation and negative self-perception.

How long does therapy for hoarding take?

Although treatment can vary, most people demonstrate improvement after 23 sessions, with some showing improvement after just a few sessions. Researchers have developed a 26-session cognitive behavioral program. People who hoard may need “maintenance” sessions over the years if the problem arises repeatedly.

Are there medications for hoarding?

The more commonly-prescribed medications for hoarding are including antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). This can include drugs such as venlafaxine and paroxetine. And because hoarding disorder is related to obsessive-compulsive disorder, medications for OCD, such as clomipramine, may be effective for hoarding as well.

Can hoarding come back after treatment?

Hoarding is a chronic disorder and it can last throughout an individual’s lifetime. Regularly checking in with a psychotherapist can help manage symptoms long-term. A good therapist will help the person learn needed skills including decision-making, organization, and stress reduction. The patient will gain a better perspective and the need to cling to useless items will lessen.
