We work with depression , anxiety, bipolar, PTSD, eating disorders, bereavement, borderline, autism, ADHD, addiction, sexual abuse, DV, medical illnesses, relationship problems, LGTBQ+, adjustment disorders and forensic cases.
Footprints was started by a therapist who realized that often times the services provided to low socio-economic communities is lacking quality care. We noticed these communities where confronted with long wait times, disrespectful admins, and subpar treatment. The one and only purpose was to exploit the community for profit without providing the level of care deserved. Feel Better Therapy began from the inspiration to provide quality mental health care to the poorest of communities and treating the clients of this community the same way a rich patient would be treated in a clinic treating affluent clients.

Anxiety, depression , and/or low self-esteem are hurting your life. You don’t want to be around friends or family anymore. You’ve isolated or haven’t felt up to doing much. Sleeping (or lack of) has become an issue. Getting out of bed is a struggle and daily life isn’t as easy as it used to be. Your mind is racing with negative thoughts. You don’t feel quite like yourself and you’re feeling lost. You ask yourself, “Is this ever going to end? Will I ever get better?” You may feel helpless, but you’re not alone. I’ve been in your shoes before. I know that the pain you feel is *real*.

Trauma is something that you might have managed to put away but eventually comes back in symptoms such as anxiety, panic, depression , anger, and feeling disconnected.
Trauma is the inability to be in the present. Trauma therapy is not about understanding what happened, in fact talking about it can be retraumatizing (Bessel 2020). Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk is a world-renowned trauma research and author of “The Body Keeps the Score”, a New York Times bestseller for years.

Deciding to look for a therapist let alone beginning therapy can be a daunting task for many. We’re told that our mental health isn’t a priority, that we shouldn’t be weak and that we should ‘stop being sad’ or ‘get over it’ with such great advice from family and friends alike no wonder our issues and stresses seem to only get worse. More often than not we seek therapy because the people in our lives refuse to go to therapy. If you’re dealing with anxiety, depression , trauma or have thought to yourself that it is time that I took care of my mental health, then you are not alone.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
