I specialize in people with trauma and chronic illness because I can relate, as I have been there before.
Every person is unique and therefore should have unique treatment. I like to get to know my clients in a holistic way, meaning I look at all angles of the human experience. As a Life Coach I like to clear up the past a bit, but then actively move forward.

I work with adults of all backgrounds seeking support with challenges including anxiety/OCD, relationship issues, sexual functioning issues, chronic pain, cancer, and grief/loss.
Hi! I’m Madeline. In my practice, I integrate somatic work with traditional talk therapy techniques because one without the other is often not enough. Using approaches that engage and integrate your mind, body, and spirit allows you to uncover and re-frame unhelpful beliefs, learn to trust yourself, and deepen your relationships with others. Though most of us experience some form of trauma or loss in our lives, I do not believe we are destined to stay stuck in our suffering. With self-compassion and curiosity, we can achieve a more integrated, loving sense of self.

Whether you’re going through trauma, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, or relationship issues you’re in the right place.
In sessions we’ll use fancy techniques like Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and more to take down some of the intensity of what you’ve been feeling so you can experience yourself as more grounded. We’ll use those therapies and some dark, sarcastic humor. Yes, we can laugh in therapy!

I have previous experience working with individuals who experience symptoms of ADHD, anxiety, depression, grief, self-esteem issues, medical non-adherence, pain management as well as many others.
No two people are alike and as a result, each intervention style and identified objectives will be individualized to your specific needs and presentations. I use the intake sessions to get to know you, and in turn allow you to get to know me. At the beginning, I will ask you about what has brought you in to therapy, what you are hoping to gain from therapy, where you are in your life and what has led to this moment in your life. These questions help lay the foundation to the treatment plan. I use an integrative approach, based on what has founded in research, to work collaboratively with you to create your goals and a plan.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
