“Slow breathing is like an anchor in the midst of an emotional storm: the anchor won't make the storm go away, but it will hold you steady until it passes." quoted by Russ Harris. This quote is a good reminder to us that in times when we may feel overwhelmed with the stressors of life, to just stop for one moment to slow down the pace of our life and our thoughts. I know taking this first step to obtain additional support in your life may not have been easy, but I am so glad that you did. My goal with working with you is to provide you these small reminders and to empower you to improve what is currently working well in your life.

Life is a journey and sometimes adjusting to changes and challenges in our lives can be overwhelming. Sometimes we just need a listening ear, a safe place to be heard and to be given the support needed for that moment and beyond. My role as your counselor is to help you build connections within yourself and others around you. By allowing you the opportunity to be heard, I create an atmosphere for a safe environment with a non-judgemental space. I approach therapy in a direct way to challenge clients to meet their potential and meet their goals. I promote honesty for yourself to create open communication and direction to change.

In addition, I offer CBT-I for insomnia as a standalone treatment or in addition to other issues.
Many of the people I work with have been managing a lot for a long time- careers, families, expectations. From the outside, things might even look fine. But internally, anxiety can quietly build until the body and mind start sounding the alarm. If that sounds familiar, I’m here to help you understand what’s happening and feel more like yourself again.

With 40 years' experience and 9 years of postgraduate training, I earned my Doctor's degree at Cornell University. I always listen first for strengths and gifts you already possess. Then I help you to use those strengths to recover the inner peace, interpersonal confidence, and spiritual balance that you once enjoyed. I serve adults and couples. Hey, life can be tough. Some events are out of our control and sometimes we tend to get in our own way. Often negative events in our childhood shape our adult responses leading to anxiety, depression, avoidance, and panic. Whatever the experience you’re here because you’re ready to overcome it. As a solution-focused therapist, my goal is to help you uncover your true potential and lead a life that is worth celebrating.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
