Treatment is different with each person. At the heart of my therapeutic approach is careful, thoughtful and non-judgmental listening. It is important that you feel understood and comfortable that we can work together collaboratively. Beginning therapy, people hope to find relief, feel ambivalent, are unsure about their wants and fear the unknown. I view psychotherapy as a two-person process. We will focus on understanding your feelings, struggles and the roots of repetitive life patterns and relationships. This approach will help you to develop individualized ways of decreasing suffering, promoting insight, improving self-esteem and regaining self-control.

You give so much. You know you should put your needs first, but doing so feels "selfish." As empaths and caregivers many of us learned our needs have to go on the back burner, early in life. This often leads to unfulfilling adult relationships. What if I told you there is room for you to both get your needs met and be of service to those you love? I work with people like us to detangle faulty beliefs, break unfulfilling relationship patterns, and find a comfortable space to love others as well as ourselves.

Something brought you here. Maybe it's anxiety that won't quiet down. A relationship that ended. A loss you're still carrying. Or a quiet feeling that the life you knew no longer fits — and you're not sure how to find your way back. I'm Dr. Dan. I've been doing this for 15 years and I still find purpose and meaning in it every single day. I work mostly with individual adults navigating anxiety, depression, grief, life transitions, and the complicated aftermath of things that didn't go as they should have. My approach is tailored to the client. I help people shift how they experience their situation, not just understand it.

We all struggle with the demands of life, and there are times when the ground below our feet is shaky and uncertain. The goal of treatment is to bring you to a place where you feel confident, safe, and ready to move forward and embrace all that life has to offer. Therapy allows for the abandonment of irrational thoughts by creating healthy perceptions, and a new repertoire of productive behaviors and thoughts. What to do when you feel that you cannot change the world? Realize that you can change your community, even if that means buying a cup of coffee and donut for the homeless person sitting outside the 7/11. It's a change!

FAQ - Therapist Gender
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
