Whether or not you have built significant insight into yourself and your struggles, insight alone is not sufficient for many when it comes to changing the way we think, feel, and operate on a daily basis. Trauma, "Big T" or "small t," can leave intrenched thinking and behavioral patterns that require real clinical work to mend and reframe. If you've been struggling to break old patterns/cycles despite understanding where they come from, an eclectic, trauma-informed "bottom up" approach may be right for you.

Therapy is often a misunderstood concept, with many people perceiving it as a one-sided conversation where the therapist simply listens and provides occasional feedback. However, therapy is much more than that. I'm all about meaningful interaction and connecting as human beings. My main objective is to help you achieve your desired outcomes, while making the therapeutic journey as enjoyable and enlightening as possible. Therapy doesn't have to be a painful experience. My goal as a therapist is to create a collaborative and supportive environment where my clients feel motivated and inspired to make positive changes in their lives.

A person may decide to go to therapy after building up the strength and courage needed to ask for a little help, but then you are left with a big choice and the selection appears vast. One of the MOST important decisions you can make is in finding the right therapist for YOU. I have a very strong background in life and spent over 10 years working in residential treatment for addiction. That afforded me an opportunity to work with issues ranging from mood and personality disorders to early trauma. Originally, I pursued a life in the arts but now my pursuits are directed towards giving both children and adults a chance to feel better.

Therapy is about facilitating conversations to help someone build self-awareness and healthier relationships with oneself and others. The experience of watching an individual grow beyond their current mindset of sadness, depression, feelings of hopelessness to unworthiness into an individual who truly knows and believes in their personal value is why I love therapy. To make you as comfortable as possible, we can also meet in your home. I have found that providing services in the home, when appropriate, can break down barriers and allow your natural environment to play a role in the healing process.

I think that we need to be the safest when we are able to be with ourselves. I have also found that life has the ability to make that hard at times and through my own journey of struggling and learning about my mental health, I learned a lot about being human. I don't believe that we are born resilient, I believe it is built into us through getting knocked down and learning different ways of getting back up. This isn't always fun but it's always worth it. I am all about empowering my clients to learn who they are, so they can better love themselves, and be better able to obtain and maintain a happier and healthier life.

Domestic Abuse Therapists

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?

Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognize that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?

Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?

Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?

It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
