The decision to begin (or deepen) therapy is a big one. I imagine you’ve attempted to manage a lot of things as best as you possibly could and that led you here. I’m so happy you’re here. I help clients navigate life when there’s been a few (or many) wrong turns and bumps in the road. I am skilled at working with all parts of a client when they have a history of trauma (knowingly or not). This often takes the form of eating disorders, anxiety, emotional overwhelm or dysregulation, dissociation, self-esteem issues, relationship issues, or substance use.

During my career, I have worked with both individual and group settings, including adults with people living with HIV, veterans, incarcerated people and transgender/gender variant individuals. These populations included people with depression, bi-polar disorder, personality disorders, anxiety, PTSD and depression. I co-facilitated a group for trans youth and co-coordinated it for 6 years. As a proud bisexual, trans man, I love to work with my LGBT communities. I celebrate kinky and poly people. I strive to be an imperfect ally to non-binary trans people and people of color.

If you are in a rural area of Florida where therapy is not as convenient to locate or you would feel better if you could access therapy from your own private space for whatever reason, I can accommodate you via a secure HIPPA Compliant video conferencing therapy session.

As a clinical psychologist, people contact me for psychotherapy when experiencing emotional pain or distress, within themselves and sometimes their relationships. This pain can feel stuck and take on a life of its own, with ways of coping that no longer seem to be working. Yet the person feels ready for a change - ready to begin a process of growth and healing. Couples approach me for relationship therapy who struggle with disconnection, miscommunication, reactivity - couples stuck in negative patterns. These couples are ready for a change, ready for greater intimacy, security and connection in their most important relationship.

I believe that each person innately holds the answers to their own healing, yet healing can often be blocked by deeply embedded societal systems, stigmatization, oppression, and past trauma. I believe that each person can discover, trust, and give voice to their most authentic self with support. Therapeutically, I endeavor to co-create solutions with those experiencing unwanted effects of trauma which can be experienced and manifest in our lives in many ways. My experience in counseling and passion is in helping clients recover from addiction, unresolved trauma, and adverse childhood experiences.

I approach counseling with a trauma-informed perspective and the fundamental belief that we are all whole individuals - each of us unique; equally deserving of love, understanding, and compassion; and capable of making positive changes to achieve well-being, contentment, and meaningful connection. While there are many factors that may interrupt your ability to live life fully, my goal is to help you identify, understand, and resolve your own unique life stressors.

Anxiety, depression, panic disorders, and unhealthy relationships can often be traced back to unresolved trauma, particularly if it took place over a long period of time or targeted your own self-worth. Your story doesn't have to end there; I can help. I've been a member of veteran and first responder communities for over 20 years and I specialize in working with those populations, including those struggling with chronic illnesses and rehabilitative medicine. Prior to counseling, I also served for fifteen years as an educator and developed a passion for helping adolescents and young adults to navigate their pathways to adulthood.

It can take a tremendous amount of courage to start therapy and not everyone considering therapy has trauma or some big event they can't handle. Regardless if you're in here because you are struggling, grieving, wanting to balance self-care, or simply seeking an outside perspective, it is my job to provide a safe, compassionate and non-judgmental place for you to do that. Each individual and situation is unique, and being able to meet the individual where they are at is very important. Just being able to share in a safe space, and/or gain another perspective can have a tremendous impact. I look forward to meeting you!

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapists
What is Internal Family Systems therapy?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on sub-personalities, or “families,” within a person, which may be made up of wounded parts and unpleasant emotions like anger and shame. These sub-personalities can come into conflict with each other and with an individual’s core Self, leaving the person feeling detached from positive traits such as the “8 C’s” of confidence, calmness, creativity, clarity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and connectedness. By healing a patient’s wounded parts, a therapist aims to restore balance and bring on positive change.
How does Internal Family Systems therapy work?
An IFS therapist will work with a patient to identify their particular sub-personalities, recognize the emotions powering them, and release them. By doing so, the patient should become more able to address any underlying problems their sub-personalities may have been trying to protect them from. Ultimately, a patient discovers ways to manage internal and external conflicts on their own, through techniques such as relaxation exercises, journaling, and making charts depicting the relationships between their core Self and their distinct parts.
Does Internal Family Systems therapy work?
IFS therapy has been shown to help people address conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, fears and phobias, trauma, and substance use disorders. Some research has also found that it can help individuals deal with symptoms of physical health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain, everyday functioning, depressive feelings, and low self-compassion. There are some conditions for which IFS treatment, specifically discussions of one’s “parts,” may be less appropriate, such as schizophrenia or other states that involve psychosis or paranoia.
How long does Internal Family Systems therapy take?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for IFS therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core concepts of IFS, some patients quickly make progress. While experiences vary, most will find that it is a relatively longer-term therapy, involving months and sometimes years of sessions.
