Not accepting new clients
I work with adults (ages 18+) to treat a multitude of concerns including depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, substance/ alcohol use disorders, trauma, PTSD, self-esteem, identity development, life transitions, and interpersonal relationships.
It takes courage to seek therapy and begin the journey towards a more satisfying life. It is not always the easiest path, but one that proves to be invaluable for most in the end. My approach to therapy is to provide a safe, non-judgmental atmosphere where my clients can openly explore all aspects of their lives in a caring, compassionate, and collaborative therapeutic relationship. I believe each client I meet is a unique individual deserving of an individualized approach and personalized treatment plan. You will never get a "one size fits all" approach with me.

An ideal client recognizes their substance use has become problematic and is motivated to make positive changes. They may face physical, emotional, and interpersonal issues and feel overwhelmed. Services they may require include diagnosis, counseling, group therapy, and referrals for additional resources. Their goals may include abstinence, physical/mental health improvement, relationship repair, and healthy coping strategies. Motivations for seeking help vary, but clients must have a desire for a fulfilling life free from negative consequences of substance abuse. Support and empowerment are essential in the journey to recovery.

Hello, My name is Petergay Sterling. I am a psychoanalytical therapist and a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner student. I am currently transitioning to medicine and will not accept any new clients personally. My KEBT team has been trained and is supervised closely by me in EMDR therapy. We utilize eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) to decrease the impact of reliving emotionally traumatizing memories. By healing past wounds, the individuals we see are able to re-engage in their lives. For a complete description of EMDR, please review the following link: http://www.emdr.com/what-is-emdr/

I am board certified in clinical social work and hypnosis. I have a PhD in natural health. Prior to that, I worked for 25 years as a policy manager for corporate, government and non profit organizations, and understand work/home stress. We'll talk about what's going on in your life, and what approach will help you move forward.

Too often we use language such as “that’s good enough” or “I guess that’ll do.” Commonly, these phrases reflect a pattern of settling for just getting by. I believe we can achieve more than just “good enough” in all facets of our lives – our careers, our partnerships, our passions. It’s time to stop going through the motions and selling yourself short. You don’t have to settle for “fine.” Thank you for visiting my profile. As a psychotherapist who holds a doctoral degree in psychology, I enjoy working with adults by walking my clients through the difficult challenges and valleys of life to empower them to achieve liberation.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
