I have many years of experience working with adults suffering from addiction, mood disorders and relationship discord.
Are you struggling day to day with feelings of sadness or being easily overwhelmed? Do you find it difficult to complete simple tasks or engage with your friends and family? Are you finding yourself coping with these feelings through unhealthy means such as drug and alcohol or other addictive behaviors? I am here to help and you are not alone. Together, we will work to meet your specific goals to help you achieve success and personal growth. Personal growth must come from within, so while the process might not always be smooth and easy, the outcome will bring you serenity.

I’m well- versed in treating complex issues, such as trauma and addiction, with evidence-based treatment modalities.
From an early age, I’ve known what it’s like to face adversity. I beat childhood cancer twice and in recent years dealt with a brain tumor. As a survivor of many serious health diagnoses, I’ve made it my life’s work to help others overcome their own challenges. I began my career serving clients through nonprofit work, specializing in treating severe and persistent mental illness including Depression, Anxiety and Bipolar Disorder as well as substance abuse. These continue to be my areas of expertise.

You feel lonely, disconnected, and empty, Maybe you notice yourself withdrawing or feeling alone in a full room of loved ones. Maybe you find yourself bottling up your feelings and afraid to talk about things that bother you. And maybe sometimes this leads you to impulsive behaviors thinking things like "how did I get here?" Maybe you feel like there's a hole where your heart should be. Or perhaps you are overwhelmed with your life and cannot find any time for yourself.

My approach to counseling is mainly from a person-centered, non-authoritative style that allows clients to process, discover, and find their own solutions. By fostering a non-judgmental space; clients are met where they are and viewed as the experts in their lives. Through various evidence based techniques of counseling, clients are empowered to challenge internal thinking processes and motivated to create positive change. As clients discover how to utilize their inner strengths to bring about these transformations, autonomy increases, and independence is fortified.

Many of my clients have undergone many distressing experiences, sometimes traumatic, in their lives from grief to complex PTSD or are just needing some support through an adjustment they are making either in the phase of life they are in or desiring a deeper sense of themselves and/or what is holding them back from living their best lives. They may feel stuck or waited a long time to seek therapy or just want to come back to it to continue their therapy because they have benefited from it in the past. My ideal clients are looking for direction, healing, and/or overcoming difficult odds whether currently or as a result their past.

One of the most challenging issues is learning to identify, manage and eventually control anxiety. It wastes your physical and psychic energy and disrupts your daily life, including your sleep. Another is properly diagnosing clinical depression and creating a realistic treatment plan of action. Our daily stressors fuel some of the above problems and other personal challenges that impact not only our mental health but our physical health. Working together and supporting your strengths, wisdom and ideas we will return and recapture the well-being and inner peace all of us strive for.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
