As a trauma therapist, I know it takes courage to share your private experiences & vulnerabilities with someone new to you—such as a counselor. This understanding informs everything about my practice—in building our working relationship, I seek to cultivate a safe, healthy space where no matter who you are, you can be your most authentic self, without judgement. One of my missions is serving those who serve others—I have extensive experience working with military veterans & first responders, & if that’s you, I can help you cultivate the tools you need to navigate the uniquely challenging stressors and traumas of those experiences.

I'm so happy you find yourself here in this moment. Reaching out for help is hard. It takes a lot to act on that little whisper inside saying maybe it's time to talk to someone about whatever it is going on in life. I want to applaud you for taking that step and hopefully take the next one with you and start the work. I've worked in a variety of settings from community behavioral health, domestic violence services, healthcare, and with veterans .

WHAT TO DO, WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. God didn't design you for defeat. He designed you for victory. Sometimes it feels like the world is ripping apart at the seams, and it feels like your heart can't take any more hurt. All too often, these fears are crippling, keeping us from the life God has called you to live. But no matter what the world throws at you each day-- anxiety, depression, fear, confusion, temptation -- you have a choice on how to respond. Through the practical application of God's Word, you can gain a fresh focus and purpose, become a person of character, and shine a light into your darkness.

One afternoon I told my wife that after another tour, I would be leaving the U.S. Coast Guard for a very different career. Serving my country and the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard is one of the greatest honors and privileges of my life. After serving for nine years I knew that directly assisting and serving people is the life-giving work of my heart. I became a Social Worker and therapist because it is my greatest joy and pleasure to support you as you unify all your strengths and gifts to release your Faith, Hope, and Love into society.

Life has a peculiar way of setting us on paths that we never expected to travel. For some, this means finding yourself "stuck", lost, lonely, depressed, or anxious. Others find themselves struggling with a major life transition, health condition, or traumatic life event or loss they never imagined experiencing and now not getting the support they need to move forward. Perhaps you have found yourself juggling so many different roles or responsibilities, you feel like you can no longer manage to balance or focus. We don't choose for these things to happen, but they happen.

Are you motivated to understand yourself better, grow in perspective and insight about your world and circumstances, and translate this learning into meaningful action? If so, we may be a good match! I believe truly effective therapy happens when we are ready to look deeply and critically at our current situation, ready to really try to make sustainable, practical changes, and able to be humble and self-compassionate in our attempts to flourish. You do not have to know exactly what you want or need, or have all the answers, but being willing to find those together is the key to meaningful therapy.

I often compare counseling to chemotherapy. I went through chemotherapy because I believed it offered hope for curing my cancer. In a similar vein, counseling offers you the hope of a new way of doing life. Are your relationships all you want them to be? Are you able to put words to your feelings? Or do they just seem like a dark mess? Are you feeling powerless and out of control in your world? Cor Counseling is a safe place to explore your heart and to learn new ways of living.

Human beings are storytellers. We weave stories from our understanding of our own lives and the lives of those around us. As our minds compose the story it is possible for us to lose track of the plot. Occasionally we find ourselves believing that we are a supporting character in our own lives. You are meant to be the protagonist of your own story. I believe that you are meant to live a life of unique purpose, and that you are worthy of dignity and respect. Counseling can be the place where we recalibrate our thinking, and strengthen the parts of ourselves we keep hidden and safe. Sometimes we need help, and that is only human.

I work from a relational and insight oriented approach. I believe that we were all created for connection and that our woundedness often gets in the way of this connectedness, whether it be to God or to others. Deep, intensive, soul counseling can help heal this woundedness so that connections are more honest, genuine, and whole. It should also leave you with a deeper sense of self and identity, so that you can interact in healthy ways with the world around you.

My goal is to improve client’s mental health, so that they may feel better and perform more effectively. I provide a space where clients can be “heard” without judgment and able to identify their strengths. These strengths are then combined with research-based practices to help clients build the skills needed to achieve their personal goals. When goals are uncertain, I assist in clarifying them and the plan to achieve them designed uniquely for each individual. My services are provided in the least restrictive manner possible, provided and as quickly possible.

How's your relationship with yourself? Relationships can bring us joy, and connection, and opportunities to grow. We talk to friends and loved ones, spend time with them, and we care for them. How much time do you spend deepening your relationship with yourself? Do you pay attention to how you talk to yourself, how you spend time with yourself, how you care for your Self? It is my experience both personally and professionally that when we spend time working on our relationship with Self, not only do we become happier, and more peaceful internally- our external relationships with others improve as well.

You want change, but nothing seems to be working or getting better. You are fed up with feeling uncomfortable in your own skin, feeling insecure and unsatisfied. You cannot escape the same issues from occurring within your relationships. You might not even remember a time when things didn’t feel this way. But one thing is for sure: you are ready for some relief. You are ready to find peace and confidence. You are ready to feel connected and understood. Most of all, you are ready to feel empowered and proud of the person you were created to be.

How can I find a therapist in Gainesville?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
