As a therapist, I use an integrated approach where I collaborate and individualize each counseling style with the needs of your child, not limited to play therapy, person-centered therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, solution-focused therapy, trauma-focused, attachment-based interventions, and more.
Hello, my name is Carina, and I am a bilingual therapist. Thank you for taking a moment to read a bit about me as a therapist. I am passionate about working with children, adolescents, and young adults. This passion has led me to work with empowering children and adolescents at a domestic violence shelter and helped provide theraplay-based groups for children. In private practice, I have experience with anxiety, depression, trauma, families, substance abuse, and behavioral related concerns. I believe that the therapeutic relationship and meeting your child where they are developmentally are key components in treatment.

If you're experiencing worry and stress due to current or upcoming life transitions, it can feel overwhelming and hard to find a way out. Starting college, moving to a new city, beginning a first job, and building and maintaining a support system can be stressful and overwhelming. Things can become even more daunting when there are existing problems like depression, anxiety, and trauma. I've helped young adults succeed in their academic, professional, and interpersonal pursuits, and I can help you as well. I serve as a consistent source of support while providing direct feedback and guidance.

Hi there. If you're here, you're probably looking to turn over a new leaf in life. What if I told you that change doesn't have to be so scary after all? I strive to create a safe, welcoming and empathetic space for those who are looking for an outlet: whether that means working through issues experienced in the past, the present or if you are looking to learn better coping skills for your future. The stress that comes from navigating trauma, relationships and our ideas about ourselves can feel like a struggle, but you don't have to go through it alone. Collaboratively, we can work as a team to turn that struggle into solace.

Have you been contemplating reaching out for therapy services? Is the thought of talking about your problems to a complete stranger causing you distress in itself? How does a life less burdened by distressful images, emotions, symptoms and replaced with relief, confidence, and peace sound? Conditioned negative behaviors, patterns, and stress may quickly take charge of your life resulting in feeling overwhelmed leaving you with no motivation or hope. The struggle may seem real in this moment but it does not have to be a part of your daily norm and it certainly does not have to be something you live with for the rest of your life.

Are YOU feeling heard? My philosophy is rooted in Cheryl Richardson’s quote that “people start to heal the moment they feel heard” and my professional goal is to empower adults and teens to move from “surviving to thriving.” Using a holistic, trauma-informed approach, I've successfully supported teens and adults to acknowledge, navigate through and overcome negative patterns of thought and behavior that often lead to depression, anxiety, social isolation, generational trauma, boundary issues and negative self worth.

We, as humans, are designed to move toward healing. Our cuts and scrapes scab over, becoming whole again. The healing process is hindered if something continues to cut and scrape the same spot, not allowing the scab to form. This is where symptoms like depression and anxiety develop, when healing has not been allowed to happen.

As people, we have a deep need to be understood, and one of the most profound ways to explore and experience this is in a safe and affirming therapeutic relationship. As a therapist, I work with individuals using an eclectic and holistic approach, walking alongside each individual to identify their needs and put their inner experience at the center, engaging both mind and body, so that barriers to their well-being can be lifted. In my practice, I look to be responsive, collaborative, and affirmative when working with folks' intersecting identities and how those identities show up within the therapeutic relationship.

As a pregnant mom to be, a freshly postpartum mom, a mom who has suffered trauma, or an established mom, the feelings of stress and the weight of being overwhelmed consume you and make your daily life challenging. This includes postpartum anxiety and depression, mom guilt, the effects of birth trauma or infant loss, and the difficulty of finding yourself again. It's so hard, and even "trying your best" can be exhausting. Processing these emotions and events, trying out new coping skills, and adjusting routines and expectations are among the ways we can work together to improve the way you feel.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
