Now scheduling for student intern sessions! Supervised student interns are an affordable option for quality counseling. Throughout our lifespan, we will be faced with transitions. Children experiences changes within the family as well as school, friends, and daily routine. Then there’s puberty, which brings about a whole new set of changes in a
teenager
. Early adulthood is full of change, as well as a search for meaning and purpose. Marriage, divorce, birth of children, death of parents, middle age, retirement, and on and on! Sometimes we can move through these transitions smoothly; however, other times it doesn’t go quite as well.

I have experience in providing substance abuse counseling to
adolescent
and adult populations.
I have faith in the idea that people can, and do change. In my experience, change is not always a linear process. Often, when trying to change a situation or behavior, people fall short or stumble. Being able to truly evaluate an individual's strengths and building upon those, allows for the needed empowerment to overcome our barriers. I am passionate about helping individuals to overcome various behavioral health concerns. Whether you are facing addiction, anxiety, anger issues, grief, stress, depression or trauma, I use a strengths based approach, coupled with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to build upon your inherit resiliency to affect change.

It is often difficult to find someone who you can trust and who will really listen. Yet, we all need a safe place where we can tell our story and speak honestly. Sometimes life can become especially difficult. Having an objective, trained counselor can provide the tools and opportunity to open the door to peace and understanding. I believe passionately in the power of therapy to reshape lives and discover our innate capabilities. Often couseling will include disputing false beliefs like "I'm not good enough". Yes, you are. Come on in and I will prove it to you!

Let’s do real talk. Life can be hard! Understanding what children are experiencing can be difficult. Best of intentions by parents are often misunderstood. When you are a child, talking to your parents is seemingly impossible sometimes. Kids have big emotions they cannot understand or describe, and they think no one will get. Academic stressors, development, parent and peer relationships and significant or traumatic life events can cause a child or
teenager
to react in various ways. Some kids need a safe space to learn how to identify, express and cope with their feelings. Processing feelings helps to reduce stress and pressures.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
