The journey from
pregnancy
to birth to parenthood can bring a range of emotions, fears and expectations.
Are you expecting a child or already a parent? Many soon to be/new parents wonder, what are the baby blues and how are they different than
postpartum
depression? What are
perinatal
mood and anxiety disorders? Do men also suffer with
perinatal
mood and anxiety disorders? Do you ever wonder if you are doing a good job as a parent and/or is your baby/child doing alright? We will most likely parent the way we were parented unless we are aware of the changes we want to make with our children. Do you have questions about what to expect with
pregnancy
or parenthood? I can help you explore these questions and support your journey.

Trigger WARNING. The moment you saw the 2 lines you became a MOM. Your life is no longer the same. You're changed. You imagine a future with your baby. Then death knocks you down. There’s no heartbeat.
Miscarriage
. You feel Angry. Sad. Helpless. Guilty. You are collapsing inside. You touch your belly and it feels different now. You're not having a baby. You feel like the world stopped and the future you had imagined with your baby is shattered. You feel like your body failed you. People don't understand your grief. You try to move on but can't. You are grieving. Your pain matters. You're not alone. Your baby existed and is loved.

Family building can be an incredibly difficult time for those struggling with fertility. The emotional rollercoaster of months and years of trying, countless exams, tests, injections, and procedures can be daunting. Many individuals can even experience trauma from all the physically invasive procedures that occur with fertility treatment. Each month a
pregnancy
attempt fails you can experience grief, isolation, anger and fear that the dream of building a family won't be attainable. Those able to conceive also struggle with intense emotions during
pregnancy
and
postpartum
that can be overwhelming and hard for others to understand.

The good news is most moms with
postpartum
depression who find treatment fully recover.
It has been a few months since your life changed forever. As you are looking at your baby napping on your chest you can’t help but feel so overwhelmed, tired, numb. You had imagined motherhood to be a fulfilling and exciting experience and instead you just feel sleep-deprived, lost and not yourself at all. You expected an adjustment but nothing could prepare you for the daily struggles of life with a small child. Even though at times your heart bursts with love for your baby, often you feel checked out, unable to truly bond with your child. Scouring social media for answers makes you feel even more of a failure as a mom.

I facilitate mindful family building while aiding parents with high-risk pregnancies and
postpartum
support.
I have extensive skills with adolescents/adults/families yet conceptualize my role as guiding others to vibrantly re-illuminate their lives. My passion for psychotherapy stems from my appreciation for communication as a healing agent, intensified by my MSc. in Speech Pathology from McGill University. When challenged by traumatic medical events, I was struck by patients’ capacity to recover cognitive-linguistic functioning as well as purpose/identity. At Nova Southeastern University, I cultivated expertise in individual, family, and group counseling with sensitivity to language differences/disorders and/or multiple disabilities.

Are things not going the way you thought they would or think they should? Are you or a loved one having trouble handling what life has thrown your way? This can lead to feelings of depression, anxiety, anger, panic, despair and helplessness. We cannot control the people, events or situations in our lives but we can control the way we think about them. By identifying the problem, we can work on relatively simple strategies to help you think, feel and act in a way that makes you feel better.

When relationship problems occur, couples can easily hit a roadblock. Through therapy, couples quickly learn that they most likely have a communication issue rather than a fundamental flaw of the relationship. Couples therapy works on healing and improving how you communicate. Your relationship can be strengthened and the bond of your friendship restored through couples counseling. If you're struggling in your relationship, seek help early on to avoid a build-up of resentment and disconnect. It's best to be proactive with issues that arise.

You wake up everyday and start the same daily grind. Week after week, you start to wonder "When does it get better?" You join the gym, try to meet new people, but you don't feel any different. You want to feel happy, confident and yourself again, but life keeps getting in the way. Plus, walking around wearing a mask is getting exhausting and you are ready to do something different, you just don't know where to begin. Especially since you don't feel right talking to other people, you don't want to feel like a burden. So you keep things to yourself, but it is time to start thinking about YOU and how to be happy again. You deserve it.

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?
The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.
When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?
Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.
How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?
A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.
Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?
In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
