Are you someone who struggles to ask for help? Often times, we try to brute force our way through our day-to-day schedule even if we are in distress or in need to speak with someone about how we are feeling. Sometimes we can allow shame or self-judgements to get in the way of talking about difficult symptoms or emotions with a professional. Being able to disclose and talk about these issues with someone who makes you feel safe and validated is so important. The process of disclosing may be uncomfortable at times, but it is not unbearable, so long as you have the proper clinician by your side!

Are you an adult who hasn't fully gotten over how you were treated as a child? Do you keep repeating the same negative relationship patterns or have negative beliefs about your worth? Are you overcome with sadness about the childhood you should have had and feel that you weren't given a "voice" or "choice" as a child? Have you experienced emotional neglect and/or feel that you weren't emotionally cared for as a child? Are you having difficulty navigating your adult relationship(s) with one or more of your parents because of how they treated you or because they are emotionally immature? If any of these feel true to you, I can help.

Being human is hard. Life with all it's twist and turns can be so confusing, what's right today is wrong tomorrow. Quite possibly you have been thinking about finding a counselor for some time and have been "fighting" societal stigma of mental health services. Telling yourself that you are fine, no one will understand, or feeling shame for needing help. One of my favorite quotes about healing is..."Healing doesn't mean the damage never existed. It means the damage no longer controls our lives."

I know how uncomfortable and nerve-wracking it can be to start therapy. I hope that I can make your experience as comfortable as possible. I have experience working with individuals with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, trauma, and grief. I also have experience working with families, teens and parents. I believe having the “right” therapist can be life changing. I would describe my style as warm, genuine, and non-judgmental. If you are interested in starting counseling, please contact me via email or phone. I would be honored to work alongside you on your healing journey.

Ever felt anxious or worried about going to a therapy appointment? Personal growth and the processing of issues can be hard work but it can also be fun and enjoyable. I use psychodrama, art therapy, and relaxation techniques to help people reach their goals. I don't believe in the medical model of illness, rather that everyone has challenges in life. The goal of therapy is to create positive emotional and behavioral changes to achieve optimum quality of life. Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
