Everyone thinks you are fine, but you go to work and no one can tell that you’re struggling inside. You feel depressed, anxious, worn down. All you want to do is sleep and shut out the world. The self-contempt, criticism, and doubt are real, and they are relentless. You want to reach out for help but feel guilty, even selfish. By putting everyone else at the top of your list, you’ve neglected and dishonored yourself. What you really want is to feel a sense of worth, like you belong, like you have something to contribute to this vast world.

If you have been reflecting on your life or current relationship, and words such as "stuck," "frustrated" and/ or "confused" describe how you feel, now might be the time to consider therapy. A common belief is that we "should" be able to figure things out on our own. However, human beings often grow to their fullest potential working with and connecting to a safe person (e.g. the right therapist!).

I believe that most of us have the answers within. My job is to help you remove what stands in the way. Often those obstacles are distorted perceptions about ourselves and others, our obsession with our image and ultimately how we lack love and compassion for ourselves. Therapy with me is a collaborative process that involves a unique therapeutic approach with each client rather than trying to fit my clients into a box using one approach. After an atmosphere of safety and trust is created there is little we will not be able to accomplish.

Making the decision to go to therapy never comes easily. It is important to recognize the courage it takes to make this choice to get vulnerable and take care of yourself. What’s also important is working with a therapist who can provide you with the help you need. I understand the value of the therapeutic bond and will make sure to provide you with a clear understanding of what I can help you with, as well as what that plan looks like. You don’t need to suffer in silence. We will work together to get you where you want to be.

There is little in life more anxiety producing than struggling with mental or physical health issues, substance use, recovering from trauma, or having loved ones with these difficulties. Having personal experience, my work is first about letting you know you have an ally and there is a place for you to share. Together we will find the perfect way for you to experience the power you do have, to kindle that energy so you can begin to get out of anxious worry and take positive steps to resolve the issues. You'll begin to realize you can make the decisions and take the actions to break out of feeling the way you do.

[* Email is quickest*] I approach psyche from the Jungian psychodynamic, holistic lens. I work with, but am not limited to, folks with a history of depression, mood disorders, trauma, eating disorders and sexual abuse as well as life-transitions, identity dysphoria, and spiritual crises/emergences. Together we will access the needs of psyche and soul that are calling for your attention in order for you to reach a greater sense of wholeness, and a new kind of self-knowledge. I can help you feel into the symptoms in a new way that may illuminate their cause and bring you to a greater understanding of yourself within and without.

WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU MATTERS. I help people navigate through difficult chapters in life. My advanced training is in treating trauma, PTSD, substance use, anxiety, relationship issues and grief. What makes working with me different than another therapist, you might ask? I help people work through the root cause of their problem rather than just symptom management. I use a combination of evidenced based techniques, we work together, to heal the underlying issues that cause your distress. Then everything starts to fall into place, the chaos in life reduces, you feel more comfortable and can accomplish your goals.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
