Real Life Counseling is all about what the rules are for being a human being. These rules are the guidelines for playing the game we call life. Learning and discussing these univeral truths in therapy will provide you. I feel as a professional mental health counselor they form the foundation of how we can live a fulfilling and meaningful life. I also realize they are not magic, nor do they promise ten easy steps or a quick fix for emotional ailments. I offer this service in hope that my clients will learn, grow, and become aware of their potential for happiness.

As a therapist for ten years, I have helped people with depression, anxiety, stress management, substance use, goal setting and communication.
Sometimes, life is going well. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and all the pieces seem to be in place. Sometimes, life throws us curve balls, or digs up things we thought were long buried and we slide down from our peaks. Life is about learning how to navigate the peaks and valleys that will inevitably come our way and hopefully, finding some enjoyment on the journey. Whether you find yourself looking to maximize your peak, get yourself out of a valley, or move beyond a plateau that has grown stale, I'd love to help. I am currently offering virtual morning sessions and have some flexibility for in person sessions.

You've done the work to get sober. Some things still need attention. I help men in recovery who got sober but still feel something unresolved finally process what's underneath so recovery feels complete. You've worked the steps, rebuilt your life, and yet there's something underneath that hasn't shifted. Maybe it's stuff from before the drinking started, or things that happened during. I use EMDR to help process what's stuck in the nervous system so recovery can feel complete. We'll work with your program yet reach what talk therapy and stepwork can't fully resolve. I've got 22 years in recovery myself, so I get it.

Trauma informs how we relate in the world and can be complex, confusing, and painful with multiple layers. Coping or trying to cope with trauma is challenging, interfering with what most consider "normal life activities." Its hard to explain to others who do not understand and who have never experienced something that "rocked" their world in a disturbing, sometimes literally life threatening way. When there has been any degree of trauma, what was is no longer and what is frightens, disorients us. Behaviors, thinking, feelings change in the shadow of trauma. There is help available and you are not alone. Recovery is possible.

And if addiction is having an impact on your life, education about the condition and how to battle it is something I can help you with.
Maybe there is a moment when you are so low it's hard to get back to loving yourself. It's not as easy as just getting over it, right? Let's find that spark in you and get you to where you deserve to be, happy. Some people have a difficulty talking about emotions because they can not find the right words. And then when they find those words they end up misinterpreted because they were not communicated effectively, leading to a communication breakdown. Most people have learned to become passive or aggressive communicators, which is not even our fault.

In addition, I am a Certified Addiction Professional (CAP) and support individuals in recovery as they develop healthier coping strategies and create lasting change.
Life can feel overwhelming especially when stress starts to impact your relationships, your work, or your ability to feel like yourself. I work with adults and couples to navigate challenges, strengthen connection, and build the resilience needed to move forward with greater clarity and confidence. I’m trained in EMDR, which helps your mind and body work through difficult experiences whether it’s one event or stress that’s built up over time. This means you don’t have to relive everything in detail. Many people find they feel less triggered, sleep better, and start to feel more like themselves again.

What is the best therapy for addiction?
Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?
Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?
The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
