Uncertainty is one of the most uncomfortable experiences. It's easy to get stuck in unhelpful thinking patterns such as "I should do more" and "I shouldn't worry about that." Oftentimes, as a result, we experience anxiety or distress. You may find yourself juggling work or school demands, relationship stress and even self-doubt. Creating balance in your life may not seem easy, but it's possible. Seeking the support of a psychologist can be a powerful step towards making a difference in your life. I focus on creating a collaborative environment to help you develop more adaptive ways to cope and to make supportive life changes.

After the year 2020 I think we can all agree that life can not only be difficult, but it can also throw us unexpected curve balls. So much can feel outside of our control whether we are adjusting to life during a global pandemic, job or relationships losses, or other circumstances that may be driving you to confront your struggles. I recognize how difficult and vulnerable it is to seek therapy so I want to begin by congratulating you in making this decision. I am intentional about providing an empathic and empowering approach to create a safe, nonjudgmental space for us to work together to address your therapy goals.

You wake up everyday and start the same daily grind. Week after week, you start to wonder "When does it get better?" You join the gym, try to meet new people, but you don't feel any different. You want to feel happy, confident and yourself again, but life keeps getting in the way. Plus, walking around wearing a mask is getting exhausting and you are ready to do something different, you just don't know where to begin. Especially since you don't feel right talking to other people, you don't want to feel like a burden. So you keep things to yourself, but it is time to start thinking about YOU and how to be happy again. You deserve it.

What if it turns out that you aren't "lazy" or "a negative person?" Imagine if you found out the opposite... that you are exhausted because you've been working hard to live with an undiagnosed mental health issue, such as ADHD, Depression, PTSD, or Anxiety. Think of the relief if you find out it's not your fault and there are treatments that can work for you. A psychological evaluation can offer a great return on investment. An accurate diagnosis and custom treatment recommendations can be life changing.

Are you and your partner stuck and frustrated? Do arguments escalate, going on and on until you're both left feeling exhausted, defensive and misunderstood. Perhaps betrayal -- financial, emotional or sexual, has occurred and you can't repair the wounds because the hurt and separation have pushed you apart. Worse yet, when you try to connect, one of you says the wrong thing, and the effort fails, leaving the other feeling rejected, deflated or resigned. This isn't what you want, but you're unable to regain harmony and trust. You need help.

Life is hard enough all on its own. It's even harder when you're using all your energy to fight off things like anxiety or depression. The space it takes up in your head is unreal. You do a good job of appearing to have it together but inside your head it's LOUD. Whether the problem is excessive worry, or doubt, it's always there, lurking, waiting to sabotage a decent day. It makes you snap at people and you don't even know why. Maybe it shows up as anger, irritability, social isolation- however it happens it's not doing anything good for you. It interferes with life overall. Living like this is exhausting and unnecessary.

Traumatic situations can vary from unresolved grief/loss, witnessing/experiencing a violent incident or accident, physical and sexual abuse, to betrayal in relationships. These experiences leave "imprints" on the mind and body which can leave us feeling anxious, depressed, “numb,” avoiding situations/places, unwanted memories, nightmares and guilt.

Hispanic and Latino Therapists
What makes a Hispanic and Latino therapist effective?
An effective Hispanic and Latino therapist can combine a culturally sensitive lens with proven therapies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). They may have an understanding of cultural attitudes to therapy, including potential stigma, and can help a client navigate those concerns. Some clients may also appreciate a therapist who is bilingual and is comfortable conversing with the client in both English and Spanish. Languages spoken are indicated on a therapist’s directory profile.
Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?
A culturally sensitive therapist is respectful and considerate of all groups, and may have specific expertise with individuals of a certain ethnicity. These considerations can help a client feel understood and can improve the therapeutic alliance. While some people think highlighting race and ethnicity could promote stereotypes and bias, most agree that knowledge about cultural differences enhances the alliance between therapist and client.
How can I recognize a therapist who has expertise working with Hispanic and Latino clients?
Successful therapy depends a great deal on the relationship between client and therapist. Start by asking the therapist about their overall approach to therapy. You may then wish to ask about the therapist’s educational background and any additional training in cultural sensitivity that they have undertaken.
How might I inquire about a therapist's experience with Hispanic and Latino clients?
Ask a potential therapist whether they've worked with individuals who share this background or whether they’ve worked in these communities. If so, you may wish to ask them to elaborate on ways that they feel especially prepared to work with Hispanic and Latino clients. If they have not worked with such clients, they may know someone who has and be able to make a referral.
Who is included in Psychology Today’s directory of Hispanic and Latino therapists?
The directory of Hispanic and Latino therapists includes providers who have identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profiles, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. When the number of therapists near you who identify as Hispanic and Latino is limited, the directory will also show therapists with comprehensive experience working with clients from relevant backgrounds.
