I work with clients who are coping with stress and anxiety related to life changes, being overwhelmed, chronic illness, or just wanting more out of life.
I have over 16 years of experience working with individuals, couples and families. I follow a relational and strength-based approach to counseling. It is also important to me that clients feel treated like a whole person with intersecting identities that are all valued and supported. I believe that when someone feels seen and heard, they will often discover more about themselves, those they care about, and the world around them.

I work with clients who struggle with a mirage of mental health issues, from anxiety, complex ptsd, dissociative identity disorder, and many more.
I strive to make therapy less complicated to begin. I see you as a unique person—not a diagnosis or a set of symptoms. Using an eclectic therapeutic style, I draw from a variety of approaches based on what feels right for you, because no two persons are the same. I believe in flexibility, creativity, and compassion in the healing process. We’ll celebrate your progress, however small it might feel, and work through the moments you feel stuck. Therapy is your journey—I’m here to walk alongside you, not lead the way. My goal is for you to be able to dance through life, not feel stuck in it.

As a trauma informed therapist, I understand the impact of past experiences, the toll of depression/ anxiety, and trying to tackle everyday challenges.
Life in itself is challenging; let me help you learn how to face these moments with strength and love. As humans, we tend to struggle with how to handle adversity and often forget our own resiliency and ability to adapt. "We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty"- Maya Angelou.

You Want Something to Change. I Help You Make That Happen. Hi, I’m Kemi Bakare—licensed therapist, deep listener, and someone who’s genuinely invested in helping you move forward. You don’t need someone to nod and take notes. You need someone who can sit with your story, help you make sense of it, and challenge you (with care) to build the kind of life or relationship you actually want. I work with individuals, couples, and families who are done spinning their wheels. You might be stuck in old patterns, burned out by miscommunication, or simply tired of carrying so much on your own.

I typically support young adults, adolescents, and families who are navigating anxiety, relationship issues and family conflicts.
I help clients understand their reactions — whether that shows up as anxiety, irritability, avoidance, or shutting down — and learn skills to handle emotions, communicate more clearly, and cope day-to-day. I support late-identifying or late-diagnosed autistic adults navigating anxiety, depression, and identity struggles.
Do you ever feel invisible, as though the real you isn’t fully seen or understood by others? Maybe you’ve carried the pain of being misunderstood by family, friends, or society. I know how heavy it can feel when the people who should accept you don’t. While an autism diagnosis can provide clarity, it’s only part of the story. The deeper work is healing from the rejection, self-doubt, and emotional scars that come from years of not being seen for who you truly are.

I enjoy working with individuals, couples, and families. I try to offer affordable mental health counseling, because I believe that therapy should be accessible to all who need it. I also offer art therapy, play therapy, and life coaching. I want to help you to feel better--and help you to achieve the goals that matter to you. If you want, you can try a phone or online session (so you can do therapy from the comfort of home). I really look forward to working with you. At times, therapy takes effort, but it's rewarding to see the results!

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
