Are you the one everyone depends on, but no one checks on? You’re holding together a lot right now. Maybe you’re caring for an aging parent, raising kids, managing work, and trying to keep up with everyone else’s needs while quietly running on empty yourself. You may look like you’re functioning on the outside, but inside you feel exhausted, resentful, overwhelmed, or like there’s never room for you.

There comes a point when even the most capable people feel the strain — the distance in a relationship, the pressure of work, or the quiet weight of holding everything together. You want more than quick fixes; you want clarity, connection, and a sense of calm that lasts. You’re ready for support that feels thoughtful, grounded, and truly elevated. What you’re feeling is more common than you think — especially for people who carry so much responsibility. Whether the tension is showing up in your relationship, your family, or quietly within yourself, you don’t have to navigate it alone. With the right support, it’s possible!

How do I stop the negative chatter in my head? We often experience negative self-deprecating thoughts that have a huge impact on the way we feel and behave. These thoughts make us feel sad, lonely, angry, or anxious, leading to wrong choices or impacting our relationships with the people we love. Navigating through these thoughts and feelings is very difficult. However, you can learn to positively restructure the way you think of the world and yourself. Your life experience is unique and you have the opportunity and capacity to live your best life.

I hold an M.D. from the University of Minnesota, and my career has spanned roles as a medical researcher, writer, integrative provider, and now an integrative health and wellness coach. My professional path—and my own personal journey through the healthcare system—have deepened my conviction that health and wellness coaching is the missing link in today’s approach to care. I’ve experienced firsthand the power of looking at health holistically and have seen how combining integrative coaching with lifestyle medicine and behavior change can help people find the physical and emotional wellbeing they long for.

What is the most effective treatment for hoarding?
Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) has been well-studied in the treatment of hoarding. This type of therapy includes changing beliefs surrounding possessions, as well as learning how to discard items and reduce acquisitions. The hoarder may also gain much-needed organizational skills. Another useful therapy may be compassion-focused therapy, which can address emotion regulation and negative self-perception.

How long does therapy for hoarding take?
Although treatment can vary, most people demonstrate improvement after 23 sessions, with some showing improvement after just a few sessions. Researchers have developed a 26-session cognitive behavioral program. People who hoard may need “maintenance” sessions over the years if the problem arises repeatedly.

Are there medications for hoarding?
The more commonly-prescribed medications for hoarding are including antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). This can include drugs such as venlafaxine and paroxetine. And because hoarding disorder is related to obsessive-compulsive disorder, medications for OCD, such as clomipramine, may be effective for hoarding as well.

Can hoarding come back after treatment?
Hoarding is a chronic disorder and it can last throughout an individual’s lifetime. Regularly checking in with a psychotherapist can help manage symptoms long-term. A good therapist will help the person learn needed skills including decision-making, organization, and stress reduction. The patient will gain a better perspective and the need to cling to useless items will lessen.
