I have helped many teens and families set household expectations to avoid misunderstandings and create balance within the family system.
I've often described myself as a personal trainer for the mind. My approach is uncomplicated but requires hard work by both therapist and client. I use this simple motto: Change your thoughts, change your life. My passion is empowering clients to engage in deep self reflection and challenge the unhealthy choices we make on a daily basis that result in increased stress and prevent us from experiencing joy. I'd be honored to help you take control of your mental health and guide you through the process of making a lasting lifestyle change.

I work with issues such as depression, anxiety, trauma, relationships, grief and loss, family issues, and mood regulation.
I strongly believe that our experiences shape our perspectives and influence how we move through our lives. Having the individual human being in mind and considering their unique social, cultural, economic, and spiritual experiences and how they have impacted their lives and mental health, I acknowledge that within each client lies inherent strengths to draw from towards healing and growth. My goal is to help each client discover and build upon those strengths. As a therapist is to provide a safe therapeutic environment to establish a collaborative relationship with which we can work together through a tailored, integrated approach.

Starting therapy can be difficult, especially if it's not the norm in your family or community.
Have you been praying and walking in faith but still feel stuck, unsure about your future, struggling with relationship issues, hurt from the past, worry about the future, or trauma? Let’s talk! I am passionate about supporting people seeking clarity with difficult life decisions or circumstances. Allow me to help you explore your experiences, existing beliefs, and perspective. Let’s see if unhealthy thoughts or unhelpful behavior patterns contribute to unwanted circumstances. Perhaps you are struggling with boundaries or need help with communicating your feelings. Therapy can help.

Abbe Horsburgh is a therapist who focuses primarily on anxiety, depression, and problems with relationships (of all kinds). She works with individuals, but also with families, where conflicts, misunderstandings, and harmful acts, whether past or present, often create distance and painful cutoffs. Abbe did her post-graduate training at the Ackerman Institute for the Family in NYC, and so is highly experienced in this work. With all clients, she is goal-oriented and pro-active, not being the type of therapist who simply listens well.

I specialize in individual therapy, pre-marital and marriage counseling, and in parenting and family issues.
I believe that many emotional problems people experience stem from the accumulation of previously well intentioned but flawed solutions for every day difficulties. These solutions often create secondary dysfunctional issues which aggravate the original problem. This vicious cycle is particularly relevant to relationships. Unreasonable expectations of oneself and others combined with inappropriate behavior in certain situations contribute to the downward spiral. Using evidence based strategies, I coach clients to make the appropriate attitudinal, emotional and behavioral changes necessary which can result in creative and workable solutions to their difficulties resulting in lasting emotional growth and greater satisfaction with their lives.

I believe that the root of a problem can be traced back to the family system.
Is life feeling difficult right about now? Could you use someone to talk to outside of your family and friends? I'm here for you. I have experience working with a myriad of concerns but my most common ones are: family conflict, relational issues, self-esteem/confidence, depression, anxiety, life transitions and identity exploration. If one or many of these issues resonate with you, I am here to provide some support and maybe even offer new insight into your situation.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
