Traumatic situations can vary from unresolved grief/loss, witnessing/experiencing a violent incident or accident, physical and sexual abuse , to betrayal in relationships. These experiences leave "imprints" on the mind and body which can leave us feeling anxious, depressed, “numb,” avoiding situations/places, unwanted memories, nightmares and guilt.

Trauma is BIG...and small. It comes in many forms and at all stages of life. Do you sometimes have flashbacks to events that happened long ago? Do certain words, objects, people or places trigger you? Do you have nightmares? Do you wonder if perhaps something that happened that you can't forget was a traumatic event? Do you wonder if you suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder? Did anyone ever tell you they think you have PTSD? I use a combination of IFS and EMDR to help you resolve PTSD, life conflicts and severe stressors. Take the next step to see if an All Day Intensive is right for you or regular hourly sessions works best.

You find yourself dealing with life in ways that are not healthy, appropriate, or adaptive. You function with high levels of stress, leading to more conflicts, more anger, guilt and shame, and more stress. You start to believe that something is wrong with you, that you are a bad person, that you are not worthy of love. You feel trapped. Unresolved or disturbing memories, childhood maltreatment, and traumatic events shape the ways you view the world and the ways you view yourself. But trust me: you do not have to be scripted by your past. You can leave your past in the past and own back your life.

Are you tough on yourself for little mistakes? Do you say harsh things to yourself that you wouldn't say to another human being? Do you feel like you are on high alert for the next bad thing to happen? You're smart and capable, but you feel like everyone else is doing better. Some days you can manage the anxiety, and other days it feels overwhelming. You aren't crazy or losing your mind, but you just can't ignore how miserable you feel sometimes.

I believe that a successful therapeutic relationship is based on careful listening and honest feedback. I help clients cultivate authentic relationships in their lives; both with themselves and others. I work collaboratively with my clients to identify and achieve their goals for therapy and strive to meet the client where they are in the present moment. Using empirically validated treatments, I consider the treatment approach that best fits my client, and provide psychoeducation and a rationale for the selected treatment modality. I genuinely believe that change is possible and attempt to instill hope in all my clients.

Brene Brown once said, "No one rides for free. It's not about if we struggle, but how we struggle." This is a statement that I truly adopt in my therapy practice. If you struggle with recovering from trauma, low self-esteem, or perfectionism, you are not the only one! You deserve inner resolution and the ability to live up to your innate human potential. I'm grateful that you found me and I see your courage in being here, welcome! I respond best to email rather than phone since I'm in session all day!

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
