If you are here today then you have taken the first step! You are searching and ready for a change. You are seeking support and understanding. You need guidance with the overwhelming feelings from a variety of situations, whether it's a loss (of self, of a loved one, of a relationship), transitional phase, journey of self-discovery or any obstacle in between. It's difficult, it's painful, it's uncomfortable, and honestly, it sucks. I get it. Are you ready to begin the healing process? I view all of life's many challenges as opportunities for growth.

I believe that the answers are here within us, and real change is possible when we have real support and guidance. As a therapist, I approach my work with radical acceptance and deep respect for the unique and ingenious resilience that each person possesses. Through collaborative processes of self-exploration and compassionate self-awareness, clients are able to heal past wounds, move toward what they care about, and experience more connectedness, fulfillment, wellbeing, and joy. My current orientation and training is primarily focused on Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), a mindful and embodied approach to healing.

When you repeatedly find yourself in the same type of negative relationship, counseling can offer insight and support. If your relationships are causing you stress or impacting your daily life, it's a sign you may need some help. Even though relationships involve more than one person, ultimately, the only person you can change is you. With the tools and support of a trusted therapist, you can learn to set healthy boundaries and release unrealistic expectations. Oftentimes, simply gaining a new perspective on your own behavior can open the door to healthier and more satisfying relationships.

I work exclusively with couples and families. I am a Senior Certified Gottman Couples Therapist and a consultant for professionals that are learning how to use the Gottman method. I offer couples a complete assessment of their relationship and research-based tools to change the way the couple moves through time together. Currently, I am only working with couples doing intensive treatment; it consists in a 4-hour assessment the first day and two days of treatment of 6 to 8 hours each. If the couple lives in the area, we can work on sections of 4 hours per day as needed.

My approach to counseling is compassion centered, trauma-informed and non-pathologizing. Working together to create a sense of safety and trust is my highest priority. Thus, when we sit together I don’t consider it my job to ‘fix you’ but rather, to be with you. It is in being with you and bringing awareness and kindness to you exactly as you are, that we can begin to create safety in our relationship together and grieve and heal past and present challenges. I aim to help you rediscover an authentic way of being in the world that strengthens your relationship with yourself and others and moves you toward what you most want in life.

I have been in the mental health field for over 40 years. During that time, there is very little I haven't been exposed to. I teach in the Counseling Department at Sonoma State University which keeps me current on the latest in the psychotherapy world. I have supervised Trainees and Associates as their Clinical Supervisor. Supervising other clinicians helps me become the best Therapist I can be. Despite all my years of experience, I remain a lifelong student because to be an excellent therapist you need to stay humble and curious.

Choosing to work with a therapist is a very personal decision, usually prompted by facing a challenge that feels insurmountable alone. Everyone copes differently, but I believe the desire to be seen and understood is universal. I strive to create a safe, open and compassionate space for my clients to explore their struggles, and to work through thoughts, feelings and behaviors. I focus on client strengths and goals, while working collaboratively toward meaningful and sustainable growth. My hope is that clients find grounding and meaning in their lived experiences through our work together.

I believe therapy can be an incredibly valuable space to find clarity and support when we need it most. Good conversations help us identify what's ours, what old stories we may carry that do not serve us anymore, and what tools we can access and utilize towards the changes we are seeking. As a Narrative Therapist, I help create conversations that bring ease, strengths and resources to the foreground, supporting the journey with warmth. I work with clients who experience difficulty with life transitions, depression, grief, anxiety, job stressors, or struggle with significant relationships.

We all hear that you ‘just need to love yourself more.’ Something easy to do intellectually, but very difficult in practice. How do you actually do that? I don’t have any singular answer to the question, but I can explore with you what gets in the way of loving yourself the way you want and living life as your most authentic self. My work isn’t about just eradicating symptoms, but creating a deeper understanding of what drives our symptoms, and how we have learned to adapt to trauma, overwhelm, and loss by creating strategies and patterns that might no longer serve us.

I welcome couples, co-parents, families & individuals with care, acceptance and curiosity about your inner world & relationships. My aim is for all your parts to feel safe, valued and heard. While somatic psychotherapy is central to our work, when in alignment and given my social work and yogic awareness, I will also at times be directive and solution oriented to actively promote your inspired transformation and life. Collaborative & consistent relationships heal trauma, decrease emotional reactivity and increase creativity, flexibility & playfulness. This is a journey we take together as we co-create a healing relationship.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Graton?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
