CLINICAL, SPORT & PERFORMANCE PSYCHOLOGY: Mental Game Coach certified by the International Golf Psychology Association. My practice includes working with athletes, performers, and the like-minded. That "thing" of yours (pre-performance anxiety, choking, feeling like a fraud, self-sabotage, etc.) has created enough problems. Enough already. What would you be doing if that "thing" was not in your way? Imagine making that putt, rocking that assignment, nailing that performance, or enjoying the one you are with.

Your anxiety is a car on a racetrack of thoughts where the only way off is a brief pit stop for repairs. But that only delays reentry to the same circular pattern. Your mind turns familiar scenarios, images, and disasters over and over again, plunging you into stomach-clenching agony. Stress from work, family, and other relationships only make it worse. The worry and fear get so bad sometimes that they boil over into panic. The shame of losing control causes the cycle to start all over again. So you become avoidant of the people and places that seem to trigger these difficult feelings.

My approach in therapy is to respect each individual as a whole person. I believe each person knows himself or herself best. Rather than just treating the symptom(s), I attempt to get to know the person well enough to guide them into insights of the CAUSES of their problems. My ultimate goal is to help each individual achieve the healthiest level of well-being and highest developmental level of functioning. Whenever appropriate, I work with multiple members of the same family in order to strengthen the family and/or marriage.

To the untrained eye, addiction can look like a lack of willpower or weakness, and I want to help the client understand the problem as well as the solution and help them develop an escape plan long before the world closes in on them. I also believe that addiction is typically not the primary problem, but usually an attempt to solve a problem, so understanding the underlying issues that are typically rooted in trauma provides for a more complete recovery with less likelihood of relapse. I want to work with clients BEFORE it's too late, and residential treatment becomes the only option.

Relationships are at the core of what I believe matters in therapy and life. This serves as the foundation for my therapeutic style, and along with trauma, is the guiding tenet in what I have gone on to specialize in. I was initially trained as a generalist, which I believe has prepared me to work with a wide variety of presenting concerns. I find that every person who I work with comes with their own rich context full of complex experiences, identities, and a unique relationship with their mental health. It is my job to meet you right where you are with curiosity, respect, and humility. Go to Bridger-Counseling.com for more info!

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
