Hello I am John Kenner, I am a therapist and clinical social worker. I provide active behavioral counseling and therapy. My practice consists of direct clinical service including family, individual, couples, youth, adolescents , adult and elderly therapy. I use evidence based interventions, client centered therapy and life coaching. I also provide interpersonal and relationship building tools skills and techniques.

For over 20 years, my focus has been on providing effective, individualized, and research-informed treatment for children, adolescents and adults. I have worked across the developmental lifespan from birth to seventy, and am Endorsed by the Michigan Association of Infant Mental Health (Level IV). We’ll work together to help develop greater self-awareness and self-regulation skills to build up more resources – both within you and surrounding you – to face life challenges. Life is full of many different seasons, highs and lows, challenging and difficult, and we can often get lost in the flow of it all. I want to offer a space of authenticity where people feel safe to be their truest and most congruent selves. With compassion and empathy, I assist clients in learning effective coping skills, setting healthy boundaries, implementing positive lifestyle choices, enhancing communication skills as well as processing disturbing events. I specialize in working with trauma, life transitions, anxiety, and depression.

My professional life has been consistently focused on serving people in need. After obtaining my bachelors degree from Michigan State University, I initially worked in the Governor's office in Lansing. I then decided to exercise my entrepreneurial spirit and transitioned into helping guide economically challenged families to find better housing solutions by developing low cost single family homes and developing large tracts of vacant and abandoned land. This work of helping families led me to desire doing work even more impactful, which led to my returning to school and obtaining my Master's degree in Clinical Psychology from the Michigan School of Professional Psychology.

Guiding Light Counseling Services utilizes evidence-based practices to ensure ethical practice allowing clients to experience emotional relief without additional trauma. Clients create personalized treatment goals, develop crisis safety plans, and effectively work towards their treatment goals at their own pace. As a team of mental health clinicians, we provide a safe and supportive environment for clients to explore and/or examine their personal thoughts and feelings utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

Getting to the root of your pain, learning to deal with it, building upon your strengths then learning to act versus react to people and events is the goal of our approach. We have a long history of working with diverse populations, who have developed varied problems: Mental Health, Substance Abuse, Marital, Parenting, Occupational, grief and more. My personal theoretical foundation is not limited to one approach. I believe it is necessary for counselors to be adaptive. Every client is different and our responses and approaches should be equally diverse. One person may need a cognitive behavioral approach whereas another would be more responsive to brief counseling. This eclectic approach will be applied to all clients. Techniques will vary between clients to best meet the individual client's needs.

For 30+ years I have worked with people struggling with depression, anxiety, marital, family, child, career/work, military and trauma issues. I help them better understand themselves, those around them and how they can get the outcomes they want. People who talk to me feel understood and respected. They get practical direction that makes sense and gets results. I help people find the words to express what is confusing or difficult and to identify the steps needed to get the outcomes they want. I help them gain confidence and identify the inner resources needed for relief and success.

As a previous nurse assistant, teacher (toddler-12th grade) and childcare director, I have spent over a decade immersed in hands-on research to better study effective evidence based approaches for treating children and their support systems. I use these approaches eclectically to help clients and their families with sensory regulation, behavioral issues, and counsel the client's entire support system to bring balance.
