To this end, I approach all of my clients with warmth, acceptance, and the feminist belief that each person’s journey, experiences, and perspective are unique.
I’m Mary Katherine (she/her), a LGBTQ+ affirming therapist working with couples as well as individuals aged 16 and older. I enjoy helping my clients reconnect with their values so that they can navigate life changes and challenges while also reclaiming hope and empowerment. Some of the subjects I work with include self-esteem, depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, trauma, recovery after leaving an abusive relationship, religious deconstruction, after-abortion care, and no-contact adult child-parent relationships.

As a feminist therapist, I am deeply committed to fostering a therapeutic environment that embraces equality, empowerment, and inclusivity. Women residing in this area face unique challenges: pay gaps, discrimination, gender based violence, inequitable medical care, bias, gender role related expectations. It is my personal mission to help women navigate these structural hurdles in order to live fulfilling and joyous lives. In my practice, I strive to create a safe and affirming space where individuals of all genders feel valued, respected, and heard.

I'm a trauma informed, feminist, EMDR therapist.
Yes, you can cuss here. I thought I'd get that out of the way so you know you can be yourself with me. You’ve likely been to therapy before but it didn’t seem to get to the root of the problem. You know deep down there’s more to your healing than merely changing your thoughts. You have a voice inside telling you things like, “I’m not good enough, I have to be perfect, I’m an imposter, I’m unlovable.” You’re tired of believing these messages and fighting them off by yourself. You’ve tried many things to feel better. You've read books, done therapy, saved all the Instagram and/or tik-tok posts about self-care, started a yoga practice…

I have been practicing as a Marriage and Family Therapist for over thirty years. I view therapy as work that is collaborative, certain that each person can grow a life that is satisfying and meaningful. I likewise appreciate accompanying my clients as they move through the challenges that life presents all of us with into not just solutions, but into lives that are inspired by what is authentic, creative, and nourished by relationships that are informed by reciprocity.

I enjoy working with those that are "misunderstood". This is generally those with ADHD and Autism or even teens who are in the LGBTQ+ community or going through a major life change (i.e turning 18, going to college). It could even be compounded by trauma. My main goal through therapy is to work towards exploring how life experiences may have contributed to your perception of self. The ultimate goal for my clients is acceptance. Whether that's accepting themselves, their past, or what they can/cannot control.

Things can get better. I know it can be hard to believe that. Give me the opportunity to help you find what better looks like for you. It can be hard to reach out and ask for help, especially in a culture that encourages us to go it alone. But everyone needs help sometimes, and if you reach out to me I promise to meet your courage with warmth and compassion.

Do you feel like the world was designed for one type of person, and that you didn’t get or don’t want to follow the rulebook? You’ve experienced rejection, discrimination, invalidation, or misunderstandings due to your neurodivergence, gender/sexual identity, chronic illness, or disability. Hiding parts of yourself to survive leaves you disconnected from your authentic self. You may be in the process of rebuilding yourself after childhood, partner, or religious abuse. It feels like your identity itself is in question, and you want relief from the depression, anxiety, and hopelessness, and to be able to accept yourself as you are.

Feminist Therapists

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
