I specialize in strength-based, humanistic, psychodynamic, and feminist therapy.
My ideal client struggles with self-esteem, anxiety, and/or neurodivergence. They need reassurance, reframing of insecurities, support, and perhaps encouragement to advocate for themselves. Through therapy, they plan to achieve greater self-confidence, independence, and satisfaction with life. They may want a second opinion on their questions and troubles, perhaps due to societal invalidation, sexism, homophobia, and racism.

Psychotherapy can bring light to darkness, hope to fear, and empowerment to stuck-places that weigh on us. I understand my role as your therapist as being a co-journeyer in your path through healing into a healthier, fulfilling life. My style focuses on reflective-empathetic listening to promote self-acceptance and awareness; cognitive flexibility and experimenting with new choices; and the affirmation of strengths. I have specialized experience with eating disorders, body image (HAES), and the effect of loved ones' addictions/alcoholism. I also value how culture, class, education, and power differences affect close relationships.

Do struggle with a lack of motivation, procrastination, depression, anxiety, feeling easily distracted, or having difficulty making decisions? Have you ever been described as lazy, messy, forgetful, or overly emotional? These are signs of ADHD, which often goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed in women. Many people often feel like "bad adults" or struggle to understand why life tasks that seem simple for others are so difficult for them. The symptoms of ADHD, especially when left untreated, can seriously affect everyday life and relationships. Together we can find creative solutions to help manage these symptoms.

Many people experience times when they feel stuck in some important aspect of their lives, and want to find a way forward that is true to who they are and to the values that matter to them. Being stuck is often connected to unprocessed early experiences, compounded by living in the turmoil of complex and difficult times, and navigating what appear to be paradigm shifts in how we understand what is happening in and to our world. Therapy can provide a way to work towards clarity, and towards building, maintaining and balancing a healthy sense of self, healthy relationships with others, and a life that makes sense and works for us.

I work most often with people who have been pushed to the margins, including trans, non-binary and queer people, autistic and other neurodivergent people, and people who have survived traumatic events and relationships. I enjoy working with organizers, activists, and artists. I tend to be a good fit for clients experiencing shame, despair, isolation and existential dread. As a trans woman myself, I have experienced both the harms of misguided psychotherapy and the healing that can come from a co-created and trusting therapeutic relationship.

Have you been told you are “too sensitive”? Do you feel overwhelmed by anxiety? It is my belief that beneficial treatment for all kinds of emotional difficulties lies, most importantly, in a therapeutic relationship. This way of working is informed by my psychoanalytic training, which involves listening, and then, reflecting back to you what I hear. By using this process, I can assist you in learning to hear yourself, and then, to use your newly acquired self-examination skills to make decisions, and analyze your feelings in a way that makes sense to you. Your gaining clarity is my goal in any treatment we undertake, and I look forward to beginning work with you.

Sometimes the people in our lives just don’t get it. Our lives don't often offer the non-judgmental space to work through trauma, heartache, and overwhelming stress. Talking with a therapist is different from talking with a friend or family member because you are free of obligations and responsibility. It is all about you, and I will ask helpful questions, point out connections and patterns, and simply give you space to put yourself first and talk through your experiences.

Are you stumped on how to feel more seen, heard, and valued as your authentic self? I help my clients learn how to compassionately navigate these challenges and what it means to stay true to who you are or want to be in this new chapter. It can be overwhelming to look to start a new chapter in your career or personal life, exploring a new or shifting identity/ role, finding more balance between loved ones and work. My work focuses on collaboration to support your well-being, cultivating the courage and willingness to invest in you, building a community of support, and working to find ways to get unstuck from distress.

Therapy is a collaborative process that promotes healing, change, and growth, and the therapy relationship is the foundation for this process. Given this, my goal is to provide you with a safe space in which we work together to meet your needs and goals for treatment. Whether you are struggling with relationship issues, grief/loss, low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety; you feel unfulfilled, lonely, or in need of support and coping skills; or you are in the midst of a life transition that you need help navigating, we can address these in therapy.

Feminist Therapists

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
