I use client-centered, feminist empowerment, and cognitive-behavioral methods.
Therapy is a place to feel heard, understood, and to collaborate with a professional who can help you reach your wellness goals! My office in Brighton is a safe, welcoming space where you can process some of life's most important events. Through talking and processing, you can gain new insight and make meaning out of life's struggles. Therapy is a great place to find those aha moments! It is also a place to heal from circumstances that are not your fault, and to learn and practice healthier coping skills that can move you forward.

Are you part of the LGBTQIA+/kink/BDSM/ENM communities or seeking to explore this part of your identity? Have you ever felt judgment upon bringing this up? Have you ever just not felt comfortable bringing this up? Well, as a queer kink-identified therapist I understand that this is part of your identity and not a pathology. Does this mean I am going to try to move you towards ethical non monogamy or kink/BDSM? Nope! It means that this is a safe space to be you or explore those ideas. And if that’s not you? I welcome you as well.

I became a mental health counselor after many years working in student services in a university setting. I find (as the research continues to show) that the most important element of effective counseling is the connection between client and counselor—we will work collaboratively. I draw on many approaches including but not limited to client-centered, mindfulness, existential therapy, attachment theory, Buddhist psychology, solution-focused, trauma-informed, grief work, EMDR, and internal parts work.

Being human comes with complexities of great loss, love, curiosities and questions. We may reach a point in their experience where they feel like they are not living as their best and most authentic self. This can leave some feeling depressed, anxious, angry and fearful. As well as having ruminating thoughts, social withdrawal and being overwhelmed by it all. While working alongside a therapist, I believe that you can create a healthier and deeper understanding of the self, learn/practice communication skills, and process trauma to navigate and gain depth and perspective on the complexities of life.

I believe in a person’s innate ability to find meaningful change and growth in their lives. Sometimes this can come in the form of making changes, finding greater balance, or exploring ways to cope with life's stressors. Modern life can drive disconnect between where we find joy and our everyday lives. Therapy can be a safe place to explore who you are, what drives you, and how you can better cope with the stress life brings. I have experience working with individuals, families, and groups of all ages and diverse backgrounds, and have extensive experience treating depression, anxiety, grief, finding purpose, and life changes.

Perhaps you're going through a transition or quarter life crisis and trying to cope with hard things that have happened in your life. You have tried everything you can think of to try to feel better and it is just not working. Are you overwhelmed and feeling stuck? Does your mind race? Are anxiety and sadness causing you to lose sleep and feel unmotivated? You may be saying to yourself "something has to change" but feel unsure of what to do. Some days you find it hard to function. Your relationships may suffer. And you long for healthier ways to cope with life.

Feminist Therapists

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
