My approach utilizes a combination of psychodynamic, trauma-informed, and intersectional feminist theories to enhance well-being.
Finding a therapist can be difficult, especially when experiencing life challenges, symptoms of depression or anxiety, and/or other stressors. For those of us with marginalized identities, it is crucial to identify spaces where we can explore and address these issues. In my practice, I work with women and LGBTQIA+ people to address issues related to identity, life transitions, family, work, relational conflict, self-esteem, and shame. I specialize in working with the relational others (e.g., partners, spouses, family, and friends) of transgender people to explore self-identity and transition (social, emotional, physical, & medical).

My therapy modalities include cognitive behavior therapy, multicultural family therapy, narrative therapy, Trauma-focused CBT, play therapy and feminist therapy.
I believe in meeting clients where they are at! Every person is resilient. I intend our collaboration to remind you of your strengths, provide you tools to weather the storms of life, and a safe space to gain insight into your truest self. I come to social work from a social justice background and recognize that trauma and oppression are often intertwined. Acknowledging systemic issues is a vital part of my practice, particularly for youth and families directly impacted by it. Teaching you to advocate successfully on your own behalf, whether it be in your relationships or larger systems, is also essential.

I'm guided by trauma informed, social justice, feminist, art therapy, & liberation-focused approaches.
You're not too much. You deserve to take up space and have your needs met. Maybe you've learned to disconnect from your feelings and disregard your own needs filling everyone's cup but your own. You're left feeling empty, without energy or motivation to heal and fight for change. You want to make intentional changes that bring more joy, ease, and meaning but don't know where to start. You don't need to do this alone. Let's integrate your healing journey with anti-oppressive & anti-racist practices. We'll use creativity, curiosity, & connection to weave together your story, heal from trauma, & break cycles of oppression. You matter.

Therapy can be a richly rewarding process. Most important to its success is first establishing a non-judgmental, collaborative relationship so together we can identify and flexibly address your particular needs. From there our work may include identifying familiar patterned behaviors and learning specific coping and problem solving skills to allow for new ways to relate to yourself, to others, to strengthen your mind, and deepen your emotional resilience. Our work will draw on a combination of treatment modalities including short-term solution-focused practices, mindfulness, and neurobiological understandings.

I had my first position as a counselor when I was just 20 and the compassion that lived through me then continues 48 years later. While developing professionally I enrolled in a personal individual and group training analysis and had a deep and caring experience as a patient. I consider it an incredible responsibility to practice as an integrative healer as I believe the therapeutic relationship is a privilege between two people. I continue to cultivate my personal practice, evolving throughout my life with an open heart, and open mind. My mother, and father remain central influences in my practice as a psychologist/psychoanalyst.

Lets be real. You’re in a bad spot and the last thing I want to do is bore you with optimistic clichés full of toxic positivity and lofty promises of healing and wellness. If you are having a difficult time adapting to everything going on around you and these “unprecedented times”, or if you are frustrated with the collective vibe to just accept crappy circumstances, you have come to the right place.

My ideal client is one who is willing to explore uncomfortable areas in their life and understand that vulnerability is part of the process. One of the most important parts of therapy to me is highlighting accountability and what roles we play in our own lives. I enjoy working with clients who are struggling with relationship issues, self-esteem, irrational thinking, and life adjustments. A client who can pinpoint what they would like to improve in their life and request a little bit of guidance along the way is an ideal client. Their goal is not to be perfect but to improve their day-to-day life a little more each day.

In the sea of content available online, we may think that if we just take in the right information, we can feel better, but this is not the case. I believe that people change and develop in relationship. I practice therapy in a way that prioritizes the therapeutic relationship itself as the medium for change. This relationship serves as a launching point for gaining insight into one's life and practicing new ways of being. Also, I help patients see the role that trauma has played in their lives by providing education and nurturing areas of psychological growth that were suppressed because of trauma.

I offer therapy and assessment to people of all ages, 6 and up, who might be struggling with inattention, mood or anxiety, executive functioning, learning differences, family problems, or social difficulties. Therapy can help to develop self-knowledge and acceptance, confidence, and empowerment to make meaningful change. The goal of assessment is to identify a person’s unique neurodivergent strengths, challenges and needs. When I work with families, we look for solutions that respect the autonomy of all family members and addresses the emotional needs of kids - and their parents - who may be struggling with meeting expectations.

It is easy to feel overwhelmed and lose one's sense of True North. Issues and experiences from the past may require healing and integration. Current challenges may require more inner wisdom and resourcefulness than we can access on our own. Many people need support to resolve conflicts, deepen connections and expand their lives. Relationships require a solid sense of self, good boundaries, and compassion toward oneself and others, which all can be learned. Even without a religious affiliation, spiritual practices such as gratitude are often enriching. I value new insights, suggest homework and teach practical skills.

Feminist Therapists

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
