I primarily utilize Family Systems, Narrative, Feminist, DBT/CBT and Existential therapies to address concerns and create a balance of acceptance and change.
Grief, trauma and systemic oppression have increasingly become visible and universal experiences affecting individuals, couples, families and communities. I began my career working with the survivors of intimate partner violence and individuals/families grappling with cancer and death. These experiences have informed my practice working with individuals, couples and families dealing with loss, grief, trauma, anxiety/depression, major life changes, chronic illness, abuse and relational distress.

With training in feminist and multicultural theories, I counsel from an anti-oppressive lens and have spent most of my career working with the LGBTQ+ community, women, chronically ill clients, and immigrant populations.
When we experience trauma, we are often left feeling alone, misunderstood, invisible, and unsafe, even within ourselves. Through the process of therapy, we can regain hope, connection, safety, and understanding of ourselves and others. I use wide-range of evidenced-based modalities, from psychodynamic and CBT to EMDR and somatic therapies to decrease the emotional reactivity, tension, and isolation that trauma can create. Regardless of our trauma histories, our modern world can contribute to feelings of disconnection, dissatisfaction, and uncertainty about our worth and our purpose.

My therapeutic style is guided by a trauma-informed lens, rooted in feminist multicultural therapy.
Life and change are hard. You are burdened by all of the expectations around you; work, family, and cultural pressures to act/live your life a certain way. Maybe you feel like you don’t fully belong and you’re stressed. I bet that you’re also having a hard time feeling happy. I help my clients live a more authentic life for themselves while also honoring their values and culture. My goal is to support you in gently peeling back the layers, navigating what life throws your way, and teaching you skills to manage all of the stress.

I approach therapy from a feminist perspective, valuing equality, empowerment, and intersectionality in addressing various mental health concerns.
I am IFS Level One trained and primarily use this psychospiritual modality in my practice. I am also trained in IFS-informed EMDR, and sometimes blend these modalities for optimal results when working with complex trauma. I will be facilitating IFS groups in the spring of 2024.

Click in website link to schedule an intake. I truly get it and understand how real- life demands can create barriers to getting help. Maybe, for various reasons the things you have tried haven't fully worked. Of things that can impact our mental health, the impact of trauma is by far one of the things that can interfere with our ability to move with ease in life and can impact so many areas of our life. Sometimes feeling emotionally overwhelmed, shut down or on overdrive, trauma can leave us blocked from our full potential leaving us depressed and frustrated, questioning why you feel stuck.

Emotional awareness and processing are skills that many of us didn't get in our childhoods. Maybe we had a caregiver who was emotionally absent, unaware or even preoccupied with other things. Often work, relationships or sometimes even addictions. This absence of this attunement often leaves lingering core wounds in the adult child. These wounds can manifest as fear of emotions and even a distrust of oneself in one's ability to navigate the more difficult emotions. Even the lack self love and care. We learn how to simply cope with life or "survive". There is so much more to life than simply coping and surviving.

Feminist Therapists

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
