I primarily use EMDR, Family Systems Theory, Feminist Theory, and Attachment Theory to help my clients.
I work with those who struggle with trauma, relationship problems, and not taking care of oneself first. I have experience working with those who have sexual abuse or assault histories, trauma within problematic relationships, and compassion fatigue. Trauma comes in all sizes and from a variety of experiences, so do not discount what you have lived through. No matter the circumstances that bring you into therapy, we will spend time healing your wounds to help you grow into the person you wish to be, with a stronger sense of safety.

You are an expert in your own life, and my role is to guide you back to your own expertise through self- exploration and growth while finding greater balance overall. I recognize a wide variety of healthy human desires, spiritual practices, relationship organizations, and identities and will meet you where you are at and respect your personal identities and goals. I have over 10 years working in mental health and come from a background in non-profit management, sexuality studies, and fine art.

Life is messy. At River Rock Behavioral Health, we understand that change is slow and effortful; if your problems were easily solved, you wouldn’t be talking to us about them. What do you notice happening when life's demands feel too much? Do you begin to feel consumed by a critical voice? Perhaps hopelessness or shame takeover, and you aren't able to focus on what you need. You keep returning to coping strategies that aren't working, and the chaos of life leaves you exhausted. You know that you are ready for something different. I am here to listen and help you understand the "why" within your struggles. Our work will focus on allowing for all sides of you to have a voice, to be understood, and to have the space to grow.

Therapy is a unique experience. It provides the opportunity to show up exactly as you are and explore your thoughts, feelings, identities, and relationships without fear of judgement; and to feel heard, accepted, and cared for in return. Life is increasingly hard, and my goal is to provide space to decompress, navigate hardships together, and celebrate your growth and successes. We might be a good fit if you are in a life transition, experiencing anxiety or depression, struggling with body image, have specific goals you'd like to work towards (or would like to identify some!), or simply believe you could be happier.

Connection is the entire point: to self, others, and the world around us. This idea infuses everything I do in my work: my values, my approach, the trainings I attend, the way I view healing and how it happens. So what do we do when we feel disconnected from our emotions, bodies, relationships, families, work, communities, identities, perhaps even from our very sense of self? We do the hard work of reconnecting. I believe reconnection happens in many ways, and therapy is one of those ways, and I would be honored to be your therapist in this life long process.

You're living a different story. Maybe you always knew you would, because something about you has always been unusual. Maybe you planned to travel a well known path, but something happened, and you can't just go back to the way things were. Maybe you're burned out because something that was working for a long time just doesn't work anymore. Maybe you feel anxiety or depression or trauma is holding you back. You want to talk to someone comfortable with unconventional terrain, someone who doesn't insist that returning to the paved road is the answer but joins with you in the difficult work of mapping out new territory together.

Feminist Therapists

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
