Let me start by acknowledging how brave you are for taking this major step. You have been fighting so many battles, both seen and unseen by others. But here you are ready to take control of your health. I am here to help you. As a therapist with several marginalized identities, I understand the effects that disparities have on our mental health and well-being. I take many approaches to my counseling, including humanistic, existentialism, feminist, and multiculturalism. As your therapist, I will work with you on making the hard things easier to sit with.

Developing a deeper understanding about why we do the things we do is an important part of becoming the person we desire to be. Therapy can be an important tool for self discovery and recognizing our problematic patterns. I believe that therapy should meet the individual where they are and the unique set of circumstances that they exist in. I utilize a client-centered therapeutic model, have a specialization in trauma work, expertise in addiction treatment, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, existential therapy, object relations, as well as navigating psychiatry systems (having run a clinic myself).

I work with adults who are trying to figure how to feel better about themselves and their most important personal and professional relationships. Building resilience, insight and meaningful connections starts with making sense of your values, core beliefs, and your goals for yourself. Because my background includes experience in nonprofit and corporate environments, I’m also attuned to the nuances of work relationships, and how issues like communication breakdowns, lack of confidence, and burnout impact our emotional state and our relationships with ourselves.

I work with people from many walks of life. Regardless of culture, economics, gender identity, sexual orientation or vocation, one of the common threads is a quest for greater meaning, depth, authenticity & inner peace. I draw upon 25 years of professional experience blending insights and supportive tools from psychology, professional development, social justice and non-denominational spirituality. Whether you're newer to this process or a "seasoned client," I work best with people who are committed to inner growth. I provide psychotherapy as well as life and business coaching.

I approach psychotherapy from a place of empathy and non-judgment. I tailor my treatment approach to each unique individual I work with, drawing from cognitive-behavioral, relational, dialectical-behavioral and motivational interviewing; assisting clients with both the here-and-now symptoms (e.g. anxiety, depression) and the underlying issues associated with those symptoms (e.g. relationship problems, identity issues, past experiences of trauma).

Feminist Therapists

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
