Everyone has a story to tell. Sometimes it is filled with dark twists and turns, shadows, and the unexpected. Other times it is full of light, gentle breezes, and warmth. Stories are often full of both and it can be daunting to try and revisit some of the harder chapters alone. I offer a place of solace for your stories. A place where we can open and read each chapter of it together, learn from them, and gather tools to face the battles ahead. A place where we can challenge the things that still haunt us from these stories, and then put them on a shelf, a reminder of where you came from and what you’ve overcome.

You're a Reluctant Rockstar. Even though you appear to have it all together, deep down, you know you can't keep doing things this way. Despite your many achievements, you feel like an imposter. You're lacking confidence, clarity, and you feel out of control and anxious 24/7. I know you want to feel successful, present and content in your relationships like you sometimes feel in your work life. Listen it's ok to admit things aren't as good as they seem on the surface. Let me help you make sense of what you're going through and give you the tools to regain control and confidence in all aspects of your life.

Currently an LPC-Associate under the supervision of Lauren Coats, LPC-S. For some, starting therapy can feel daunting. The thought of even going to one's first therapy session can often lead to the question of "What do I even say if I go?" I create an environment where individuals do not worry or feel responsible for answering this question. Through creating an atmosphere of empathy, warmth, and connection, I invite individuals to be curious, self-compassionate, and determined to create the life they want rather than feeling overwhelmed by shame, the voices of their own inner critic, or trapped in life circumstances.

You struggle to feel confident in who you are because anxiety, fear or past hurts hold you back from the things you know in your heart you’re supposed to step into. Being human isn't always easy, and when life gets complicated and becomes challenging, therapy can help offer tools to navigate through a crisis while providing you a deeper exploration of yourself. Problems in relationships often come from old ways of coping that served you in the past, but now may be keeping you from feeling fulfilled and satisfied with your life. I believe our most challenging times can also be our greatest opportunity for change. Healing is possible, and therapy is a journey towards self-discovery where you get to explore the landscape of your own mind.

The journey will lead you to experience parts of yourself you have denied as fear has kept you where it wants you. Fear is the most destructive emotion stemming from anger, shame, guilt, despair, grief and so on. Do you feel stuck, lost, anxious, depressed, afraid, or angry? Of course, we all feel strong emotions at times. Some of us are frozen by these emotions, have panic attacks, depression, rage, or fears that affect every aspect of our lives. Others describe having a “mental block” that interferes with achieving goals, or performance enhancement. Maybe you've been to counseling and don’t feel like it helped or worked for you. I specialize in working with clients that have tried counseling and given up, feel hopeless, helpless, and desperate for someone to meet them where they are and guide them to the best version of themselves!

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
