Clients who are hurting emotionally or dealing with life problems will find acceptance and trust when working with me.
Life problems, depression, anxiety, grief, and anger are just some of the issues that adults face every day. In my practice, clients are valued, respected, and included as partners in their treatment and recovery. Together, we explore your issues and build a plan with measurable objectives that guide us as we work to heal identified hurts, clear confusing thoughts and decrease stress. When clients are motivated to make changes in their lives, we can work together to build new habits and ways of thinking that lead to recovery and peace. Some clients request testing to better understand their personality and issues and I offer that.

I believe in a values-based approach to counseling and utilize the tools of Acceptance Commitment Therapy.
You feel like anxiety has crept into all areas of your life. You avoid decisions or situations that feel overwhelming, and instead turn to any distraction (mindless eating, social media, drinking, etc.) you can find to avoid the shame and guilt of not moving forward. Maybe you're struggling with body image and wonder if you're relationship with food is normal. If you're in a relationship, maybe you feel disconnected from your partner and don't feel heard, much less understood. You avoid topics of conversation like intimacy, needs or finances because it always ends in conflict.

You feel like your world is spiraling and it’s affecting your relationship with your partner, friends, family, and even co-workers. It takes so much effort to get out of bed in the morning and you look around and see everyone else managing to juggle different aspects of life, yet you can’t seem to stop wondering how everyone but you has their “stuff” together while you are over here feeling like crap and spending time with worry and sadness. How do you even begin to get out from under this crushing feeling? It SUCKS to feel like you are stuck in a never-ending cycle of negativity with yourself and your relationships.

Life Pushes, and when it does, it can feel as though your world has tilted on its axis. Stress brings with it storms: emotional, physical, relational, financial, spiritual, including storms unique to caring for aging parents. When these storms come, it helps to have someone to trust with your story; someone to hold the "flashlight" figuratively speaking, in order to help you identify your life values, navigate your personal goals, and develop tools so your energy is spent living your life instead of existing. It is my desire to help you develop ways to exchange your current stress for strength.

Over the past couple of years, I have spent my time learning about how adolescents and young adults operate in society and what life transitions create stress and anxiety. I have spent time as a high school coach, a small group leader and a mentor, so my experience goes beyond the four walls of my counseling room.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
