I work with adults in treatment using psychoanalytic psychotherapy and relational psychoanalysis.
I believe that the relationship between patient and therapist is important. I focus on the here and now experience in therapy, while taking into account your past experiences and relationships, as we consider aspects of your life that are causing you pain. I listen to what is happening in your life and surrounding world and will help you think about your feelings and experiences, as we examine what may be interfering with you living the life you wish to lead.

I have trained at the New York Freudian Society and the New York Psychoanalytic Society.
I have been a psychotherapist for more than 20 years, counseling individuals and couples with a variety of psychiatric conditions and life transitions. I see the therapeutic relationship as a collaborative process and create an environment where you can begin to critically think about your life choices while exploring relationship patterns. I will help you achieve both clarity and resolution with respect to life transitions and relationships by asking precise questions. Together we will focus on issues regarding empowerment, liberation and healing. You will reflect, act, and reflect again on your emotional and social life.

I help individuals who are interested in working at a deep level and who seek transformation and abiding change. I aim to help people find more than just relief from the immediate concerns that lead them to enter psychotherapy, whether they be depression, anxiety, relationship problems, occupational/academic concerns, or other difficulties. I thus actively work from the ground up to help my clients develop more self-understanding, greater tolerance for distress, and a newfound security in their capacity to confront life's innumerable challenges.

With more than 10 years experience, I offer an integrated approach of contemplative psychotherapy and psychoanalytic thought.
Psychotherapy is a practice of deep listening and understanding. I help people develop insight into their troubles and look into habitual patterns that may create obstacles to their life goals. Together, we identify these patterns, explore feelings, and put effective coping skills into practice. When working with children, my approach invites the family in. Parent coaching, which involves a neurobiological understanding, and psychodynamic insight are integral. Through play therapy I help children discover ways to communicate their experience. The purpose is to establish a connection that encourages growth and the sense that children have a positive impact in their world.

My psychoanalytic training aids me in the careful listening that is critical to understanding a person's complex emotional life.
Therapeutic change requires a trusting relationship within which thoughts and feelings can be expressed and explored freely. As a seasoned therapist, I believe that the crises that bring us to the first therapy appointment can be the beginning of a process of self-exploration that leads to greater self-understanding and more effective problem solving. As we sit together, I help you reflect on what is going on in the present and how you got there. I pay close attention to patterns and themes that emerge and help you organize these so you can develop a narrative of your life that makes sense to you.

The road to self discovery and healing starts with a brave step forward. I facilitate a safe space where you can address any challenges and gain awareness into past patterns that may be affecting your present. You’ll explore ways fear or internal conflicts interfere with your life goals, relationships, and overall quality of life. Through this process, you’ll be able to recognize triggers and work towards breaking unhealthy cycles.

In addition to my social work training, I completed psychoanalytic training.
I imagine that you are seeking therapy because you feel depressed or anxious and want to explore what troubles you and why. Maybe you're unhappy at work, or aren't getting along with a partner, or are grieving the loss of someone dear to you. Therapy is a safe place where you can be yourself and open up about the difficulties you're having. Together we will identify how you get in your own way and work to remove the blocks that weigh you down and keep you from achieving your goals and more contentedly living your life.

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy helps people to draw connections between past and present, understand repeating patterns and relationship dynamics, and better know and define themselves.
There are many ways that we as human beings suffer and try to cope. Layers of personal, familial, and historical trauma contribute to problematic relationship patterns, bodily pain and illness, over- or under-working, and obsessions. But these symptoms that are a source of suffering are often also expressing things that can't be expressed otherwise or pointing to aspects of living that need more care. I help my clients use words to explore these parts of self and to have new experiences, in order to make room for a life of more fullness, love, meaning, creativity, and ease.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
