Hi! My name is Stella Cook, and I have been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in practice for about 20 years. As a social worker, I approach emotional well-being through the lens of your health, your environment, and your own understanding of yourself. I consider myself skilled at working with clients who suffer from anxiety, depression, working through major life transitions or decisions, challenges with fertility, and foster care/adoption/parenting related stress. I generally thing setting goals is important, but not everyone loves them. I approach goal setting creatively, and with agreement.

I specialize in evaluating and working with preschoolers, school aged children and adolescents with a range of psychological, educational and neuropsychological issues. These issues include developmental delays, learning disorders, chronic medical conditions, divorce, remarriage, adoption and PTSD. As part of the process, I work closely with each child's family and offer parent guidance. My goal is to help your child resume moving forward on his or her own developmental path as efficiently as possible. While trained in a psychodyamic approach, I incorporate cognitive behavioral strategies and a deep understanding of attachment research and neuropsychology into my work.

Whether you face day-to-day stressors of life; as a parent, working professional, or partner; or have experienced a traumatic event like pregnancy loss or infertility, child birth, job loss, or divorce, we'll use various cognitive techniques to disrupt negative thoughts and internal dialogues and give you the tools to create your new narrative and outcomes.
Who we want to be and how we are in this moment can be different! I can understand firsthand how the intersectionality of multiple identities we all carry, along with life experiences can have a profound impact on our wellness and equilibrium. The great news is, I believe we all possess the skills necessary to develop into the best version of ourselves. Most importantly, it is never too late to start on the journey of self-discovery and transformation and as your therapist, I'm here to support that journey.

In addition to individual psychotherapy, I provide couples therapy, pre-marital therapy and provide family therapy around divorce, custody, and co-parenting.
Psychotherapy offers an opportunity for getting more of what you want from life. Whether you are considering psychotherapy for the first time or returning after time away, I commend you for taking this step toward self-growth. During my 20 years in the mental health field and as a clinical psychologist, I've worked with a broad range of people and find the work deeply rewarding. Some issues people bring to treatment include: facing problematic patterns in life and work, loneliness and low self-esteem, perfectionism, relationship difficulties, family conflict, trauma, divorce and separation, depression and anxiety, difficulty meeting goals.

I'm a proud queer/pan/poly human, and I absolutely love being a therapist. As a straight-passing queer person, I have a lived understanding of what it’s like to have multiple marginalized identities that are misread both in and outside my communities. As a single parent who was raised in a very religious environment, I have done a lot of my own introspection and exploration to become the sex positive and body positive person I am today. I am a compassionate, non-judgmental, and empowerment-focused therapist. I aim to support you in living freely and authentically, as you thrive in your relationships with yourself and others.

Parenting work, from the decision to have a child through pregnancy, childhood, adolescence and young adulthood, has also been another important aspect of my practice.
My approach to therapy is warm and collaborative, and I seek to create a treatment specifically tailored to each client's needs. My training in psycho-dynamic, cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavioral psychotherapy, as well as mindfulness and health psychology allows me to creatively integrate all of these modalities in the treatment of depressive and anxiety disorders.

After completing a 3 year training program in parent-infant psychoanalytic psychotherapy and studying with some of the most prominent clinicians in the field of infant research, I have developed a unique way of working with parent-baby dyads, providing short-term treatment for Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PDMAs).
Pregnancy is a time of transformation as changes take place in the future mother’s body, relationship with her partner, social and work life and environment. Parents have to adjust to their rapidly changing world and to a new little human whose survival depends on them. They often feel inadequate because they are not quite sure what they are supposed to do in this new role, and having a baby can be a very challenging and isolating experience. Some parents experience anxiety and depression as well as difficulty bonding with their baby.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
