Seeking therapy is difficult. We may have overloaded friends in discussing our troubles. We may need an objective person to listen, understand. Sometimes old and new issues get entangled. A person may have experienced poor treatment in the past and have trust issues. Problems can improve when a person works with a supportive, caring therapist who feels safe and is not judgemental. A therapist can become a source of caring support. Identifying factors blocking the way forward is necessary to prioritize the interventions needed; that step be a relief. Change comes about through small steps and working on issues one at a time.

Life is hard. Intense emotions, life transitions, difficulty with relationships, mental health concerns, trauma, rejection and loneliness; are only a few of the things we can struggle with at any given time. But you don’t have to deal with these issues alone. Counseling can serve as a place for you to process past hurts and life changes, identify unhelpful relationship patterns, find new coping skills and resources for strong emotions or mental health issues, or provide yourself with the ultimate self-care by setting an hour aside to reflect on where you are, where you want to go, and what obstacles are in the way of your goals.

You don't go out much because you would be so embarrassed if you were to have a panic attack in public? You are so depressed you cannot sleep, work, or socialize? You cry all the time. You are fighting postpartum depression. You can't get past your childhood trauma. Your drug abuse has gotten out of control? You have no friends, no support, no life. You want to improve your health and quit smoking. You want to be done with anxiety, depression, stress, or substance use. You want your life back. You need help! Maybe just just need to "figure out" the next steps in your life or seeking US citizenship.

Stress, anxiety and other difficult emotions may be a normal part of life, but they don't have to be in the driver's seat on life's journey. Through my 25+ years of experience as a counselor and my personal experience of having to reclaim the driver's seat from debilitating anxiety/depression, I have learned the truth behind Marcel Proust's claim that "The voyage of discovery is not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes". It is my goal to help people gain new "eyes" through which to view current or past experiences.

We all want to live peaceful, productive and happy lives. We long for the company of family and friends, the comfort of loving relationships and the security of a safe, peaceful and prosperous world. But the wear and tear of life can create emotional, spiritual and psychological challenges. Much of what we experience in life is influenced by the lenses through which we view our world. I believe that people have all they need to address the problems they face. My task is to help them find those resources, skills, and talents that reside within and apply them in ways that will enable the individual to live their best life.

Do you find yourself paralyzed by anxiety and overwhelm, no matter what you do? You're someone who is successful, but still find yourself feeling as if you never do enough. You keep prioritizing making everyone else happy, leaving little time to take care of yourself. Compassion for others comes easy for you but you can't seem to find that same compassion for yourself and your inner critic takes over any time you make a mistake. But you're ready to make a change. You're ready to make yourself a priority. Most of all, you are ready to feel better about yourself and have more balance in your life. I want to help you get there.

I resonate with women who feel called towards a journey of self exploration. Perhaps they may be navigating their inner seasons, sensing something ancient and sacred in their bones guiding them towards deeper healing work. Maybe they also crave a sense of belonging among other likeminded people, and have a strong relationship with nature. I love the power of presence and connection with community and engaging in nourishing, playful, and creative practices with others. My spiritual connection with Earth is important to me and I hope to help others connect with nature through their experiences and integration practices.

I work with life transitions, depression, anxiety, trauma, loss or relationships. My intention is to create a relaxed and peaceful environment allowing you to be yourself and grow. I now work completely through telehealth, and I find clients are as easily able to communicate and learn coping skills, or heal negative life experiences with telehealth as in an office setting. I teach Mindfulness techniques to help you reduce stress and live more in the present. I use counseling, DBT skills, EFT tapping, and EMDR and hypnosis to help you learn ways to overcome mental health symptoms and find peace.

I believe everyone has an innate capacity to heal and change. Access to this healing is sometimes blocked when there is a need to adapt and survive traumatic, difficult or overwhelming experiences. Perhaps it is something that happened in childhood, or over a period of time, or is a single incident that occurred more recently. When access to healing is blocked, our nervous system can become overwhelmed. When this happens we may experience symptoms such as anxiety, panic, or hyper-alertness, depression, anger, low self-esteem, substance abuse, conflictual relational patterns, or low motivation.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
