My entire adult life I have worked with children and their families as a professional teacher and now a therapist. I easily relate to all ages - children, adolescents, teens, and adults. I understand how important working with families and schools can be for the mental health of the child. As a teacher for over 20 years, I understand burnout, the inner-workings of schools, and the importance of the personnels' mental health and self care. Plus, over 16 years experience with child-rearing, elderly parental care, end of life choices, adult social services, and grief and bereavement therapies for children and adults.

We all have a story to share that does not have to be defined by our past. You have what it takes to write the next chapter of your life. I would consider it a privilege for you to allow me to walk alongside you and support you as you begin this journey of healing. You are not alone. Together we can address and manage symptoms of anxiety, depression, and trauma. These concerns manifest differently for everyone. In my work I will draw from aspects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Internal Family Systems and others to make this time suit you.

I believe that strength is not defined by burying our feelings, “keeping your chin up,” or other cliche sayings that encourage silence. True strength is being vulnerable, talking about how you feel, and yes, asking for help. If you are ready to look at whatever is hurting you, whatever is interfering in your relationships, and whatever is keeping you from the life that you want to live, THAT is strength and where your true power lies.

Exclusively offering Telehealth sessions at this time. We are wired for love and belonging; however, often we are faced with experiences that leave us feeling lonely, stuck, and afraid to take the needed risks in order to experience connection. I believe one of the bravest things you can do is ask for help along the journey. Therapy is a place where you are able to be still, explore the places in your heart that are left unknown to you, and consider making wanted changes in your life. It can help you heal, develop healthy patterns, find hope, and experience a freedom that allows you to feel more connected to yourself and others.

This journey through life can be very challenging. At times we need help navigating the path. I am here to help you. While I am trained in a variety of treatment modalities, the counseling approach I use with a given client is determined by that client's preferences and personal goals, as well as the nature of the issue being addressed. All approaches used will incorporate a strengths-based, client-centered focus that seeks to enhance the client's level of motivation for personal growth and change. I provide a warm, safe, and supportive environment in which my clients can explore the issues and challenges they face.

Because of past experiences working with a variety of cultures and ages, counseling sessions feel like a friendly visit rather than interaction between counselor and client. However, Dr. Monroe incorporates skills into the visit which provide therapeutic technique. Although in-person visits are recommended, using doxy provides a secure network for telehealth and can be used from the comfort of your home. These experiences are designed to create a positive emotional healing process for the client.

I believe the heart of counseling is the healing quality we find within our relationship with others. Through relationships, we experience catharsis, safe exploration of troubles, growth, and transformation into who we are meant to be. I am excited to assist clients in moving from being stuck in old patterns to walking in newfound freedom.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
