I will work with you to identify past survivor skills that have become destructive patterns influencing daily living. These survival skills are often related to substance abuse, mental illness or trauma from past or current relationships. We will Identify destructive behaviors and cognitions while decreasing trauma influence. This opens space to create positive cognitions and boundaries. These are the stepping stones to healthy relationships, becoming your best self and achieving your true purpose.

Wanda received her MSW from Jackson State University in 2002. Wanda has experience working with children, adolescents, and adults. Wanda uses a client-centered, humanistic approach, focusing on aspects of Existentialism, mindfulness, family systems, solution focused, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, while keeping careful consideration of cultural concerns and practices. In addition to helping individuals overcome difficult emotions, I have extensive training and experience in working with athletes experiencing, depression, performance anxiety, and other life experiences.

I have 30 years of experience in the field of mental health, working with children, adolescents, teenagers, adults, geriatric, and substance abuse populations. I have worked in many professional settings: hospitals, clinics, homes, schools, and a juvenile correctional facility. All of my previous experiences in counseling and the diversity in the population served has prepared me to help you with your current needs and goals. My training includes: Cognitive and Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Aggression Replacement Training, and Complex Trauma in Children and Adolescents.

Many of us live our lives balancing one life event after another. All is well until that ONE MORE THING happens! Working with those who struggle to overcome the trauma of abusive relationships has been my life dream. However, trauma comes in many forms and leaves ugly scars that wreck havoc on our lives, but it does not have to control our lives. We can be overcomers! Working from a Mindfulness/CBT and person centered perspective allows us change the way we think about our past and regain control of our future.

Ms. Harper is a seasoned mental health professional with over 20 years of experience. She has worked in multiple specialty treatment settings including outpatient therapy, addiction treatment, and psychiatric and hospital-based settings. She has worked with various populations including adults, young adults, geriatrics, those with developmental disabilities, juvenile justice groups, and veteran populations. She treats various diagnoses including trauma, victims of violence and abuse, depression, anxiety, bipolar spectrum disorders, individuals in recovery, and clients facing change of life issues.

Our counseling philosophy is based on solution focused theory whereby we help individuals and families identify stressors which may lead to anxiety, depression, or behavioral issues and guide development of coping skills to problem solve. We find that learning to communicate with others in an assertive, non-aggressive manner facilitates creating a foundation for loving, supportive relationships. Although most sessions focus on a narrative, conversational approach, we often incorporate art therapy/play therapy in working with clients of all ages. Our clients are self-motivated individuals/families committed to improving their lives.
