I am a counseling intern and dance/movement therapist in training.
Your body has a lot to tell you, and together we can find your power to listen and honor your true self. I hope to support you in utilizing your own strengths to guide your growth and healing. In sessions together we can utilize a variety of creative outlets that speak to you. Personally, I love to incorporate dance, somatic practices, playfulness and storytelling. I believe everyone has a right to tell their story, and I’d love to hear yours.

In Dance/Movement Therapy sessions, we will utilize the mind and body in an integrative way to explore your strengths and seek wisdom from within.
You have felt unseen and unheard. But you know deep down that you are worthy. I know that you are. The challenges in life you once were able to navigate with ease are now more daunting than ever. You have turned to avoidance, substances, shopping, you name it! But none of these are helping. What you need now is someone to empathize with you. Someone who gets it, to see you and support you while you examine those unpleasant feelings and sensations.

Theories include: dance/movement therapy, elements from other creative arts therapies, mindfulness based techniques, client-centered, CBT, narrative, solution focused, and relational-cultural.
Therapy is a truly unique journey. I believe in the power of the mind-body connection and seek to help clients understand how their experiences affect their whole system. Connecting with clients brings me joy and I strive to cater my skill set to meet your specific needs. Often, I invite creativity in to help you heal and grow into a more integrated version of yourself. Movement is a helpful tool to build more awareness, but I also recognize that moving and exploring creatively in a therapeutic setting can be challenging. My hope is to help you feel more at home in yourself while finding a soft landing to do the work.

I am also passionate about integrating art, music, dance/movement, and spoken word to allow for self-expression and healing.
Your voice is stronger and louder than you believe, and I believe that every being has an untold story waiting to be heard, understood, and held with honor. We are often given the systemic message that our voices do not matter, that our stories will be outlived, or that our mental health (a.k.a. our feels) are not as important as our physical health. That is not your truth, or mine. Therapy can help you find your voice (or whatever medium works for you) so that you may continue to grow stronger, louder, and be more unapologetically YOU.

"A unique part of my practice is that I welcome somatosensory experiences into therapy – whether that be through breath work, yoga, dance, art, movement.
Olivia has worked with clients of all ages with various levels of trauma experiences, narcissistic/ sexual/ physical abuse survivors, attachment difficulties, life transitions, codepedency, depression, anxiety, grief, and familial/peer relationship concerns. Practicing both personally and professionally from an anti-racist/ anti-oppressive lens and being LGBTQIA+ affirming, Olivia honors the intersectionalities of identities, lived experiences, and the ways in which these experiences are held in our bodies. She uses movement and expression to promote holistic healing that can aid with how these experiences show up in our bodies.

I am comfortable working with a wide range of issues, and working with me is best for clients who are interested in not only talking through their problems, but physically moving about them and getting a felt sense of everything that’s going on. As a dance movement therapist, I think the body can be a marvelous source for solutions and insights, when the movement is approached in a way that’s comfortable and safe. Talking is also an important part of the process, as we are whole mind/body systems, and we work best when both are accessible and well connected to each other. Resolving and integrating the past is part of the work.

My training as a dance/movement therapist and yoga teacher allows me to attend to your whole body/mind/spirit in our work.
I believe my role as a therapist is to help you hold and find meaning in your pain, and delight with you in what is playful and pleasureful in your life. My approach is warm, direct, and collaborative. I am interested in creating a genuine, transparent and accountable relationship with you. My hope is that within our relationship we can identify and interrupt harmful patterns that may emerge in your relationships and reinforce patterns that bring you joy and connection. Therapy is inherently political, and I aim to engage with my clients in ways that are liberatory, anti-racist and affirming of their intersecting identities.

Over the past eleven years, I've worked with diverse populations in a number of different settings including residential rehabilitation, Cook County Jail, and community mental health. As a therapist who is grateful for the therapy I've received, I can confidently say - I get it from both sides. Therapy is a vulnerable process. That's why I pride myself on providing a nonjudgmental, compassionate, and authentic space that is tailored to the individual.

Suffering is often the result of less than nurturing relationships and experiences. Fear can become imprisoned in the body. Family and culture can dictate how safe it is, or not safe, to express and be yourself. My immigrant experience from Taiwan allows me deeper empathy with people navigating life transitions and relating to different cultures and new relationships. At Embodied Way Psychotherapy PLLC, I strive to empower individuals within the context of systemic injustice and complications. My work is to provide compassion and wisdom so that you can feel fully alive and authentic in your body, your world and your relationships.

Let’s start with acceptance and honoring every part of you, as the only way over is through. You are not alone. I can support and help you navigate this process.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
