Everyone has a story, and each story is different and deserves to be told. Our stories at times can be filled with unexpected and sometimes overwhelming challenges that affect each of us in different ways. Through my own personal and professional story, I have discovered that building a supportive relationship through therapy creates a safe place to explore life struggles, understand difficult issues, develop new skills, enrich relationships, and work through situations to lead a more authentic life.

I believe therapy is a way to develop a secure connection that can be rare in everyday life. Developing this connection allows one a space to express authentically what may have been hidden or not heard. Within the safety of this space, real change can begin to occur. So often we believe that it is by applying willpower to an issue that we can instigate change, and are left feeling defeated in the end. In therapy, we get the chance to take these moments of defeat and transform them. We can reorganize, reorient, gain hope, and live more satisfying lives.

Finding a good fit in a therapist is important. If you feel comfortable and at ease in the therapist’s presence, feel understood and affirmed, even “click” interpersonally on some level, you’re building a good foundation for getting what you want out of counseling. By nature, my personality style is welcoming, genuine and straightforward, calming, and supportive. I see the strengths in people and provide a compassionate, affirming presence. I think hope and humor are critically important aspects of therapy and in life.

You’ve been feeling “off” for a while now. Your life isn’t necessarily falling apart but you’re not happy. You’ve thought about going to therapy many times but then you end up procrastinating. You tell yourself you should be able to figure this out on your own and that therapy is for people with problems worse than yours. But lately something has tipped the scales. Most of the time you handle your emotions pretty well but now it’s too much with everything you have going on. You’re stressed, anxious or depressed. Some days you’re not even sure how you feel.

Accepting new clients! Life is hard, and everyone needs support at one time or another. If you are experiencing anxiety, depression, tough relationships, or difficult transitions – you are not alone. We all reach points in our lives when we could use additional care and support to help us view things from a different angle. It can be hard to ask for help. It might even be scary, and that is okay. In many cases, feeling scared may be the first step in an amazing journey of growth and new opportunities.

I believe all of us manage the ups and downs of life in different ways. Through a collaborative approach, individuals can develop more effective ways to manage these issues. I enjoy working with individuals (adolescents to adults), couples, and families who desire to make changes in their lives to better themselves. I draw on many approaches to meet your needs and what will work best for you. I believe therapy should be a comfortable process where you leave feeling you have benefited in some way.

The relationship between therapist and client is central to a positive therapeutic experience, therefore, it is important to find a therapist you feel comfortable with. My role as therapist is to help each client improve the quality of their lives as they learn to navigate difficult issues and situations or learn to manage a mental illness. In addition, each client and each issue presented require an individualized approach. To achieve appropriate treatment plans I use a variety of treatment modalities including CBT, DBT, psychoeducation and psychotherapy. I work mainly with women. I work with adult women in all stages of life.

Experiencing grief, loss, or trauma? Feeling disconnected, alone, and generally unhappy? Struggling with relationships, addiction, or painful wounds from childhood? Powerful emotions holding you back from finding enjoyment in life? If you answered yes to any of these, I can help. Oftentimes, the burdens of trauma manifest in mysterious ways and can lead to various concerns such as depression, anxiety, addiction, relationship difficulties, trust issues, isolation, numbness, and shame. These challenges can impede our ability to have healthy relationships and care for ourselves.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
