Did you know that women are 2-3 times more likely to be depressed than men and the reproductive years present the most challenges? A pregnant or postpartum woman who finds herself distressed, depressed and anxious often feels alone. You may feel ashamed, alienated, inadequate and guilty. You may wonder how you could feel this bad when you love your baby. These thoughts and feelings are symptoms. They are not a definition of who you are as a person, a woman, or a mother. You are not alone, this is not your fault. With treatment, you can feel better.
Maternal depression is the number one complication of pregnancy and childbirth, affecting approximately one million women in the US each year (one/six). Left untreated maternal depression can lead to long-term depression in the mother, a lack of emotional availability for the baby and detrimental outcomes for the family.
My clinical focus includes treatment for mood and anxiety disorders during the female reproductive life course and in response to chronic illnesses such as breast cancer. I see women from adolescence through perimenopause and offer unique workshops and support groups for pregnant and postpartum women.

Becoming a mother is a life changing experience. It can often be filled with joy and wonder, but can also include anxiety and sadness. Take steps toward postpartum wellness and become a part of a community of women who understand you. This therapy group is named after the novel by Anita Diamant, which describes the traditions and turmoil of our Matriarchs - the world of the red tent. In the red tent, support and wisdom sustains women through difficult times. This type of community is harder to experience in modern life. As babies grow older many mothers find themselves isolated and stressed and needing additional support, including stress reduction tools and techniques. This 3 session series encourages interactive discussion and assigns cognitive behavioral "homework." It is for mothers of all ages!
