"Life is not the way it's supposed to be. It's the way it is. The way you deal with it is what makes the difference." ~ Virginia Satir. The journey of life is filled with so many "bumps in the road" - illness, loss, family adjustments, physical changes. It can leave you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, depressed and out of balance, making it increasingly difficult to function in daily life. It's important to take the time to recognize and heal the emotional change that accompanies life's unexpected twists and turns. I look forward to walking this path with you...it is an honor.

I believe our beliefs, values, emotions, thoughts, and behaviors are formed based on the experiences we have in the family, society, religion, and other systems encountered throughout life.
Therapy should be a comfortable and safe place for you to explore and learn about yourself while practicing to take control of your world. Everyone has different experiences and your therapy should be guided by how you see the world and what you want in your life. I work with individuals, couples, parents, and families around issues related to depression, anxiety, child & adolescent behavior problems, relationships, and parenting. My mission is to help clients alleviate emotional pain, improve relationships, and to reach their highest potential based on their own values, beliefs, and dreams.

Chae’s therapy approach blends person-centered techniques with Internal Family Systems and EMDR.
Welcome! My wife and I founded Kintsugi Counseling in 2021. The term kintsugi represents Japan's ancient art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with urushi lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. For the Japanese, it's part of a broader philosophy of embracing the beauty of human flaws. Kintsugi Consulting and Counseling practice embraces the same philosophy in that life experiences, while some may be difficult, can lead to growth and change. Enjoy less anxiety, depression, or PTSD symptoms, and increased skills and confidence to live your life more fully.

I believe in working with the family system and often uses filial play therapy, a technique to teach parents play therapy skills.
I love working with kids ages 6 months to 12 years old and their families. I have participated in a state sponsored 2 year program to learn to assess and treat children from birth to 5 years old. I also co created and facilitated a therapeutic playgroup that included parents and children ages 3-5 years . The group was created to help children and parents build relationship through play and also provide parents with resources on how to manage tantrums or other behavioral concerns. I used play therapy techniques to assist children in processing their thoughts and feelings.

I offer adolescent, adult, couple and family therapy.
Life is challenging, difficult, often times downright sad. It may seem too overwhelming and impossible to handle, most if not all have experienced life in these dark places. Competent and caring counselors can help you figure out how to get out of those places. What's your biggest challenge? Need help with coping skills, communication, relationship problems that can benefit from being less reactive and more responsive, decision-making, parenting skills like Circle of Security, resolution of situations that have haunted you too long that EMDR can help with, anxiety that seems to control your life, loss of someone or something?...

I specialize in the treatment of trauma, grief and loss, depression, anxiety, adjustment to change, recovery from abuse, attachment related issues and family systems.
Change, loss and trauma generate stress. Persistent stress can lead to the development of negative thoughts about oneself and the world. Unresolved stress is linked to disease, disturbance in behavior and emotions and diminished well-being. Through therapy one can identify personal strengths, enhance awareness, and create opportunity for change, growth and healing.

Approaches to counseling include Supportive; Solution-Focused; Psychotherapy; Family Systems; Cognitive-Behavioral; Person-Centered; Narrative and Emotionally-Focused Therapies.
My particular areas of interest lay in coming alongside families and couples by providing marriage-enrichment and communication skills. And specifically working with concerns of anxiety, depression, anger management and communication struggles. I find joy in helping people identify behaviors that negatively affect their lives and relationships with others. I work to bring an awareness to the other voices and instincts in our lives that tug at our hearts and help foster an ability to communicate with constructive and compelling reasonableness.

Sometimes Life deals us unexpected challenges or hardships. I get that! I are no stranger to life challenges, family challenges, suicide, and many other unavoidable (and sometimes, avoidable) circumstances. For what ever reason, sometimes professional help is needed. I have a real love for what I do. I enjoy working with people, and respect them as the individuals that they are. At different times everyone is in need of extra support and understanding to aid in what I would call "life". These experiences cannot always be avoided, but they can be overcome. Reaching out is sometimes the hardest part of getting help!

I provide an environment to a client that is respectful, open, safe, nonjudgmental, and genuine. The therapeutic relationship is extremely important and will be nurtured along the way. I believe that the client is the expert on themselves; they know their story best.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
